Help with 70-200 f/4 L lens

Just wondering if there are any differences between the older and newer 70-200 f/4L non IS lens. I have found one made in 2003, and one in 2008, and am just wondering if there is much difference between them? Also how would the lenses perform with a 1.4 extender on them?

I would expect the image quality of the same lens to be about the same, regardless of year of manufacture. The 1.4 extender performs pretty well on the 70-200 F4, although you will have to keep your shutter speed up since it has no IS i.e. around 1/500 if using hand held.

Okay, although I mainly use it for motorsport, which involves panning, so the shutter problem shouldn't be too much of a worry?

You probably won't be using the extender if you are close enough to pan. And you ideally don't want a high shutter speed when panning, because it freezes the background, making it looking like the car is parked. Around 1/125 gives the background a nice motion blur while you follow the car. If that is too slow handheld, a monopod will help keep your camera and lens steady while you pan.
