I've never gotten prints from anywhere besides my local places before and in small sizes. Since I see Adorama is having a bit of a sale going on I figured I'd order a pile of 8x10s and see how they look compared with what I have been getting. There are three paper choices. Professional Glossy, Professional Lustre, and Metallic. I'm thinking that the Lustre is what I normally see, but what does the Metallic do to the look of the prints, and is it glossy or matt finish? the stuff I want to get printed is a few of my kids, but mostly a bunch of pics from the zoo that I want to print as tests before moving on.

In reading their descriptions, for portraits and people, the lustre is what I want, but of stuff like the zoo pics, it may be the metallic?

just want to get some non biased opinions.

I've never done metallic prints. I believe they are good for shots that are "rich" in saturation and such, but I'll let others who know "stuff" provide their inputs.

In the meantime, if you do a "forum search" for "metallic prints" there are plenty of threads that pop up!

I m a huge fan of Adoramapix and their output. Have gotten 8x10, 11x14 from them in all 3 glossy, lustre and metallic. Metallic is what I enjoyed the most based on the output that I have got.

I tried the same picture in all 3 and needless to say enjoyed the metallic. Though while it enhances the positives, it does bring out negatives i.e. if you have motion blur or not a sharp picture, it shows more in metallic.

However, in terms of the papper, I must say that regardless of what paper you get, it is very much an upgrade over the free prints paper that you get at some of the pharmacy joints.

Let us know what your experience is like.

It really depends on the photo. The metallic prints tend to be more popular for landscape shots, especially those rich in saturation as tonylong said, though I've used their metallic paper for monochrome prints as well and been very happy with the results. Specifically, they were for winter photos, where the metallic shine really added to the feel. The print gets almost a 3D feel to it, and has a sheen similar to those 3D holograms. If you've ever seen something printed on Fuji Pearl paper, it's similar to that.

The glossy and luster are the same as your standard glossy and lustre (i.e. somewhere between matte and glossy) prints. I tended to go with lustre. Give them each a try though to see what you like. I've been using Bay Photo recently, but I've had quite a few prints done by Adorama, and I've never been disappointed.

Thanks so far. From what I have read through searches, it would seem that vibrant colors like blues and reds would benefit from the metallic prints while colors such as browns would not be better off. I just created a Flickr account and will try to post some pics later to see what you guys would think. I think there are a few that would really benefit while several other would probably look not so great.

I have ordered all print finishes from Adoramapix, and have settled on metallic now as my standard order. The richness and depth, for the small added cost, is outstanding. I don't try to analyze which pics will or would look better, I just order metallic. I am very happy with the results.

Copy the BB code from Flickr at 800 pix on the long side and just paste it in your post here. And not to steal your thread, but I just had this pic done on metallic and it's spectacular,

When it comes to skin tones we would recommend sticking to Kodak Lustre. It's the most popular of our papers and it's what most people choose to preserve their memories of their loved ones.

But for close-ups of brightly colored animals, etc.. definitely give the metallic a try.

Thanks. I uploaded a pile of pics last night, cropped and put in an order of various sizes on the two different papers. Can't wait to get them back.

Well, I got my photos back from Adoramapix and I must say, they look 2x as good as they did on my computer screen. The photos appear sharper than they do on my screen on the laptop. I also chose no color correction and I am very happy I did.

I went with the metallic paper for a few prints, including a 16x20 of a metal type building with rocks and water around it. SCORE! the remainder I used the Lustre paper for and they look great.

I have to admit, I was nervous about the photos getting damaged in shipment. My worries were removed when I saw the box they came in. Everything was packaged well, in cardboard sleeves, and in some cases wrapped in plastic. I'll be doing more business with AdoramaPix in the future, that's a given. 100% happy customer.
