My wife is letting me buy myself a lense for Christmas (to open on Christmas day). I was going to get the 50mm f1.8 II but no one in town has one in stock. So I am now considering this lens. I will still get the 50mm sometime next year. I dont feel the need to buy those white lenses (yet) as I am a newbie. Is this a decent lense for 159.00 ?

Quantaray is not really a decent lens.

No - for a 70-300 try either the Sigma, or if she said "a lens" without putting a price limit on it maybe the new Canon 70-300 IS (not the DO!).There's also the (Ron Chappell's tested lenses in this range extensively and says it's pretty good) the Canon100-300. Quantaray doesn't make their own lenses - just buys up other, real, manufacturers' cheapie models and gets them re-badged, so you never really know what you're getting without careful study (compare design, construction, appearance, etc.). Might actually be a Sigma, but then again it might not.

I thought that Quantaray was a Ritz/Wolf camera store brand made by Sigma. I have read good reviews about this lense and thought someone here might own one. I do have a price limit. The 50mm f1.8 is around 80 bucks and I would be pushing my luck spending double that on a lense.

Then I would just order a nifty fifty from somewhere and open it when it gets there. If this lens is what you really what then don't dettle for something else just to have something to open. You will regret it every time you use it.

Some of their lenses are made by Sigma. Others aren't. If you look at their line-up, some of the lenses don't have a Sigma counterpart, but do correspond to Tamron, or Tokina, or Phoenix, or . . .

There's a huge long post on Quantaray lenses right here in this forum front page.. (this post moved to the correct EF lens forum) it explains in great detail what Quantaray really is,. and it's not neccesarily Sigma,. and more to the point,. the ones that are made by Sigma are NOT the same as Sigma branded lenses. You can get better fro less by avoiding Quantaray.

It would not be "settling" I want a tele lense too. Sounds like this lense is crap anyway. The point to getting this lense is to have something to open on Christmas day. The XT was my present and I got it early. Now I dont have anything under the tree to open. The wife wants me to have something to open. So for around 150.00 bucks or less, what do you all suggest?

Since you just bought your XT then look into the Canon EF 75-300 seen here:

It will double your XT rebate and then the money you get back could buy your 50mm 1.8.

Done deal. I found it locally for about what it would have cost to ship it. Now I just have to wait until Sunday to use it. ;)

Cool glad it worked out for you. I am thinking about getting this lens for myself.
