So I recently got myself another lens. This time I picked up a EF 50mm f2.5 Compact Macro. (yeah, I know I now need the Life Size converter now...) But this lens seems to be a very nice for shooting video with. It's light and if the frame was any tighter I think shooting video would he very hard unless you were mounted on a tripod or monopod. It was already hard enough hand holding this lens while trying to shot video and attempting to keep any kind of focus.

And some of the first things I shot with it were the bees on one of my salvia bushes and these hover flies. These were just some short test clips I put together.

Hover

Bee Dance

Hover is all slowed down by 60%, shot at 720p/60fps. I also used a 12mm extension to get a little closer and a larger subject in the frame.

Bee Dance was meant to be more "manic" and wasn't slowed down or sped up at all. Real life speed of those creatures!

very nice Chas, liked the hover one best, the bee one made me feel dizzy but i really liked the detail in the opening frames of it - stunning.

I like the first vid, which is a bee fly rather than a hoverfly I think.

The bee one shows why I seldom get a shot of a bee in focus.

Thanks guys. The Bee Dance one was ment to be a bit frenetic and crazy. I shot them in 720/60fps. I could have slowed down the the bee video, but I wanted that one to be crazy and darting. Kind of like the creatures themselves. Hover was a lot easier to shoot, well, because they hover quite a bit and are slower paced.

Having that new lens makes it a bit easier to get closer to these creatures. I'd still love to have a 100mm macro, but that might be a lot harder to get steady video shots. I would have to use some sort of stablization with that long of a lens. Maybe someday I'll own a proper 1:1 macro lens. :)
