I think this is a juvenile pied-billed grebe. I have about a hundred pics but this is the one I like the best. I love that at this stage the eyes are still translucent brown. I think adults have much darker eyes.

Beautiful shot, I love grebes. Looks to be a Juvi or possibly non-breeding Adult.

Excellent shots, how on earth did you get so close?

Great job, Jo. They are tough to approach, aren't they? And if they become spooked they dive and seemingly never come up again.

Well done Jo, these are tricky to photograph, especially as close as you got :)

Great shots, Jo-they can be skittish and elusive. The first time I saw 1 I thought it was a duckling-they all look like juveniles to me.

Thanks Adam, the adults will be more skittish, this one just kept swimming towards me that's why I think this is a juvie.

Thanks Bret, maybe I smelled bird poop because I was on my belly a few minutes back taking pictures of godwits :)

Thanks Al, this young grebe actually did the reverse. Every time he (or she) surfaces it was closer and closer to me :)

Very well done, not always an easy bird to approach. I'm impressed at how long they can stay under, no telling where they might pop back up.
