Lucky you - I'm still waiting for the brown truck - and the website only says 'Out for Delivery'. C'mon they should be more sensible than that and scan the package at every stop they make so that I can track Out for Delivery packages :p

I'm assuming it has a tension ring? If so, adjust it so that you have some friction but it's fairly slack. Cup your hand under the lens like you would on any large zoom and just practice. Ambient temperatures will affect the friction so you will have to adjust the ring frequently. I tighten mine right up to put the lens away.

Nezmo, thanks. I tried messing around with the tightening ring, but I don't think I got a handle on it. Question on that: it turns infinitely, right?

Thanks.

Not on the 100-400 it doesn't. It goes far enough one way to 'lock' the zoom and then enough the other way to make it very lose. But from my memory (not got it to hand), it does not turn infinitely. The 28-300 could well be different.

OK, the baby is here! Don't you just love the feeling of taking it out of the box... First impressions after 15 minutes:

--> not as heavy as a lot of folks complain about it, very comparible to 70-200 IS;
--> push/pull - I'll need to get used to the darn thing;
--> first few pics aren't too bad on the cam screen, though haven't uploaded them yet;
--> aperture jumps to 5 a bit too quickly in the zooming process;
--> very solid build - again, very comparible to 70-200 IS;
--> the hood is flower-shaper, unlike the 70-200 IS;
--> did I mention that I'll need to get used that push/pull mechanism ;) Any advice on how-to from 28-300 or 100-400 owners will be appreciated.

This is it for now, but tomorrow will have some pics uploaded and more impressions.

Merry Christmas!

I think you will get the hang of the push pull zoom,I use my 100-400 for airshows and find zooming is very quick.:D

If you don't turn the locking ring separately from the focussing ring, it'll turn forever and never lock. You need to turn just the locking ring. That'll turn as far as possible CW (from the camera) to lock, and CCW to unlock, but no further.

I think they wait around the corner and when you have to leave for 5 minutes they pull up to ring your doorbell. They could have a hidden microphone inside your house too.

Well, if they waited for me today, they waited until 5 minutes after I left.

Really odd tracking today. I checked it yesterday and it was scheduled to be delivered today. Checked this morning and it was on the truck for delivery, but with a scheduled date of the 27th. If it isn't home when I get back, UPS is going to get a long, scathing letter.

I had this same thing happen on a book I ordered for my wife. In the end it was delivered today as originally stated.

To the OP:

Congratulations on a nice piece of glass. Can't wait to read your review. My dad has an old Sears FSLR and one of his zooms is a push/pull. I found it nice to use and actually had a time adjusting to the twisting of my current lenses.

Jon, brilliant! That exactly what it was. The one thing that still bothers me with this push/pull is pulling it back when it's fully extended (at 300) pulling it back is a ****, so I'm not sure if it's this particular one or are they all. I'm planning to stop by the B&H next week to have one of their professionals to look at it.

Merry Christmas!

Seems like all the shippers were struggling a bit this year. I did get my package, but it arrived at 7:00 PM yesterday, after I had arrived at work for the evening.

Oh well, I snagged it this morning and got it to the proper person for further wrapping. My life has been spared for another year, I guess.
