I always have my 70-200 with me. I might need it and I definitely need the exercise.

If I was limiting myself to just 2 lenses and 1 body for a week holiday then I'd take my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM and my 70-200 f2.8 IS L MkII and my 5D3. I think they're my most used kit at the moment. I think I'd take my 580EX II as well just in case I needed it as well.

Depends if you are more "getting away" or "getting the shots" I guess. I find on full frame, that the 24-105 is nice to sling on my shoulder and walk about when I am just getting away. Good range for pretty much whatever happens along and yet if I don't shoot it all day it's not in the way or a big deal. If I am going for more serious "getting the shot" then forget about it, I just lugged 35lbs of cameras and lenses in a back pack all around Africa for two weeks to get great shots! Shoulder is still recovering but worth every second of soreness!

Like modchild, I take my 24-70 and 70-200 with me on holiday. What else I take depends on what kind of holiday I'm on, but these two are essential.

Are you going on vaca with family or others that will demand you attention? If so, take the 24-105 and be done with it. You will not want to fuss around and switch lenses - nor will the other people in your party want to stand around while you figure out the best lens for the shot and switch to it (and back again to get the alternative shot). And if you want to be in the shot, good luck handing the 70-200 off to someone esle to take said shot. If it is just you wandering around, take whatever you want.

I actually had two vacations this year - one to Moab for off-roading and one to Japan. For the Moab trip I brought five different lenses, including the 70-200. I think I only switched out the 105 once to my 50 f1.4 to get an indoor shot. I learned and took the 105 and the 50 to Japan with me. I think I only used the 50 for a couple of indoor shots - next time, I will switch the 50 for a 40 pancake and save some space and weight.

It's just me being away this time. As mentioned the 200 was purely for the zoo as the last time I went to a zoo I only had the 24-105. Yes the 200 isn't close enough, I do have a 400 but it's too heavy and big compared to 200.

I havnt really been on a holiday in 13 years. !!!

I'd take it, heavy is relative though.

If you're pretty sure you wont use it and your bothered by the weight, then don't take it. If you have to lug it around and you end up not enjoying you vacation that is no good.

To me part of the fun of the vacation is the pictures I take.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

I travel quite a bit and when I brought the 70-200 I agonised over the F2.8 IS II or the F4 IS. In the end because of size and weight issues I went with the F4 IS. I never leave home without it and find I use it and my 24-105 the most. I find myself getting the 70-200 out at every opportunity I can, in fact I use it more for landscape type shots than for people shots. I've since brought a 24-70 and now wonder if I should have put up with the weight and size penalty and gone with the f2.8 because I love the wider aperture.

Which "coastal city"? That focal length would be very handy for shooting on Sydney Harbour.

I was wondering the same until I purchased a black Rapid strap!
The lens is heavy but I am finding it is my most used lens!
With the strap it`s a breeze!

I have taken the 70-200/2.8 IS on vacations. It is heavy, so you should get a good bag if you plan to carry it around.

My vacations usually consists of taking pics, so I take a 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 100-400mm and a 10-22mm. I might carry them everyday, but I have them available. :)
