I have to say that, if you are considering upgrading to the 600EX-RT, it is AWESOME. I previously had two 580EX's and the PW flex/mini combo. What a disaster. Between the interference issues, trying to remember the order to power everything up between camera, flash & PWs, all the batteries, it was a hassle. Given, if you go OCF alot, you don't need to relearn the learning curve every time. But for the occassional OCF guy like me, I spent more time setting everything up and re-learning it than I did taking shots. I became discouraged. I sold all that stuff to upgrade to a better way.

This morning I started playing with the 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT companion remote. What a treat this was! It just 'works' and it works great. And aside from that, I have an existing MT-24EX and using that ring flash as a master and 600EX-RT as the optical slave is flawless. Simply cycling through the link button changes from radio slave to optical slave. Obviously the ring flash is an optical master - Im talking about how easy it is to switch between radio and optical OCF.

Anyway just talking out loud to share my experience. I plan on going OCF much more given the ease of use of these flashes / accessories.

You aren't helping! :-)

I've given some thought to replacing my flash kit (2 430EX, 1 580EX, an ST-E2, and a Flashwave RF trigger) with a pair of 600EX-RT and an ST-E3-RT. Hearing good reviews just tempts me more!

Stop reading this. Go to BH Photo. Now!! Seriously, if you factor in the resale market for your existing gear, its a great upgrade.

Why are you still here? :p

LOL...

Yeah, it's just the price tag that keeps me away. $1,500 shopping cart... less my resale money, but still.

Especially when I've kinda gotten used to the limitations of what I have. It all works, just not all the time!

Another "I love my 600EX-RTs" user. Got the ST-E3 too, mainly to keep the weight off of my camera. Super to use!!

Question, since the new ST-E3 does not have an AF assist beam, does it make the OCF 600 fire it's AF assist beam? Probably not, huh?

Nope, you do give up the AF beam. But, if I need that, I can put the 600EX on and use it as the master.

Just got my 4th 600 this week. They are very nice units. The ST-E3 is a great master unit, especially when using the 600s in modifiers and not wanting the extra weight on the camera.

On 5DIII they are beyond peer. On 5DII they will do everything the 580EXII can do with the benefit of the radio triggering.

The ST-E3 / 600EX are great, but if you don't want to sell all your gear (and flash on camera is not a larger prority) you may want to take a look at the Phottix Odins (external link) because they are brilliant too. They will even do remote manual power setting with your 430ex which don't have that feature otherwise.

I was going to make a thread like this because I am tickled pink by how well these work. Got three 600EX-RTs and the ST-E3. They are just fun to use, as opposed to separate radio triggers. Considering buying one more. That's a lotta dinero that I'm trying not to think about, and that tends to go away when you start playing with them.

Add me to the list of happy 600 EX -RT ST-E3 users. No need to link up to Pocket Wizard II. Have Manual and ETTL with Radio. Well worth the investment. May be adding a third 600 EX-RT and a second ST-E3 for second camera body soon.
