I know the lighting isn't particularly the best (I'm not big on using the flash as I don't know how to use it to my advantage just yet). However, I thought this was a cute pic (biased because it's my kid!).

Tips on shooting in low light situations without flash are welcomed.

Well, I can say I know where you're coming from. If I'm not mistaken, the 220EX flash doesn't have a directional head on it, therefore most of the flash pictures look flat. For shooting in low light, the only way to do it is buy a fast lens. The "nifty fifty" as they call it is the cheapest and is pretty fast at f1.8. Your Sigma EX 50-500 f1.4-6.3 aught to be a good lens for this as long as you keep it at 50mm. I would say to consider investing in at least a 420EX flash. By being able to bounce the flash, you can acheive some amazing results. Otherwise you've got to invest some big money in expensive lenses that have a low aperture value. A good flash comes out cheaper. Anywho, that is a good picture of your child, just under exposed. I hope this helps. . .

Do you allow editing? When I take shots like this that I want to save, I use a little post processing.

Real cute shot for sure. Needs a little lightning help is all and may be a little soft. Focus is very hard in low light situations.

I loved the kids at the coke machine shot on your link!!!

The only way to shoot in low light without using the flash is to raise the ISO, but it will put more noise in the image. Neat Image is a very cool free program to help reduce the noise.

Cute shot BTW.

Thanks for the tips and comments. The built in flash for close-up shots is way too pwerful and kills the shot. The flash I have is one I bought for my still canon years ago. I do need to invest in another flash with an adjustable head so I can bounce the flash as suggested. It's on my list...maybe Santa will hook me up!!!

Have you tried setting your flash exposure compensation? Turn it down a few steps and see what happens. Even an external flash set in TTL mode can sometimes be too bright and need this same thing . . .

Haven't thought of that...however, how do I do it? I have the 300d. Thanks.

I messed with it a little...used Neat Image to reduce the noise, messed with the saturation, brightness, contrast and USM. Here's what I came up with...and I'm by no means good with PS.

I noticed you're from Boston! We are about 10 minutes from Foxboro Stadium. :)
