Amateur Photog in the UK did a review in a July issue. Verdict? Not dramatically better than the old one........

I really don't like the new (white) font on the side of the lens saying it's the 24-70mm.

I watched the review from thatnikonguy as well. I think he sums it up pretty well. It's a similar case of the 70-200f2.8 IS mkI vs mkII.

Not saying the mkI is bad, the mkII is just better. Whether or not it's worth it depends on who you talk to.

You want the absolute best? Pay the price and get the mkII. Simple as that.

It's probably harder for people who already owns mkI to justify the upgrade, but I'll be seriously considering it to upgrade my 24-105.

^^^
Thats it
I don't think anyone can dispute that its not the best. Personally, I feel its over priced with respect to other lenses. However I want the best, so I bought it.

Still the same boring ol' lens :(

When they say it has a 'plasticky' build, is the lens barrel actually made of plastic? Or is this a stupid question:)?

I don't see what the issue is. I don't recommend dropping any lens.

Just curious that's all:). It costs more than a 24, 50 or 85L, but they've all got a metal barrel.

To be honest, I didn't realize it was plastic till I read the comments here.
Its a fair question, its an expensive purchase, and rightly so you should do your due diligence. I guess I have some faith in Canons reputation that they produce quality. I don't know of too many lens that are short lived when treated fairly, so to me the plastic is a non issue.

BTW, wouldn't plastic be more shock resistant and forgiving?

I believe it's the same material as the 100mm L. Everyone's biggest complaint with the 24-70 ver I was the weight of it so I'm sure that's why Canon made the change. Some say it feels cheap, but I don't mind it at all with my 100mm L.
