17-55 noise...normal?

Can a few people take this lens and just turn it back and forth between upside down and right side up.....is there any sound? I just sold my copy to someone on Craigslist, and they contacted me this morning saying there is a clink when flipping it over. Not sure what to think about this since I've never noticed any sound (although I never really looked for it either), and he didn't notice it when we met and he inspected the lens. He also made no mention of any effects on IQ or mechanical function.

Mine clunks when shaken, especially when fully zoomed in to 55mm. It's normal for this lens considering the design.

I vaguely remember hearing sound when I actually shook the lens, but he is saying it happens just when turning the lens over.

Anyone else? I want to be sure before I respond to his inquiry.

It is the fairly large IS element moving when the lens is unpowered. It's normal.

if he bought the lens off craigslist, i assume he picked it up. once he walks away with it its his problem, if there even is one.

He did inspect the lens before paying, so ultimately yes, it is on him now. However, I don't want anyone to feel as though they got ripped off so I did provide an email response/explanation. It stinks to have that pit in your stomach thinking you got taken for a ride. And to the very best of my knowledge, the lens was in absolute mint operational condition.

Then your conscience is clear. Tell him it's normal and leave it at that. If he suggests he doesn't want the lens I would suggest it's buyers remorse on his side.

i can understand, i generally feel the same as you. However people will take you for a ride if you let them.

if the lens was fine when you sold it, there is nothing you can or should do.

Weird. I never noticed it. Its there; barely audiable.

I wouldn't call it a "chunk", more like a slight shift of something. You'd never hear it if not held near the ear in a fairly quiet room.

Interesting how a Small Claims Court judge can see it differently. If the ad doesn't say "as-is", or the receipt, there are many stories going against this common-sense claim. Judges ... sheez.

Sounds more like the buyer thinks there's a problem that isn't.
