Best two body combo

Ok, I know there are a lot of people who have a primary camera and their older camera has become their backup. I'm not talking about these. I'm wondering if you take the full range from landscape, architecture, portraits, street stuff, sports, widelife, birds-in-flight, macro, and any other type of work you can do what do you consider the best two camera Canon combo?

Last year I would bet it was the 1Ds III and 1D IV I and now I'm sure a lot will say the 1Dx + 1Dx but I currently have a 5D III and 1D IV and I'm thinking that gives me a lot of versatility. Of course I'd like to have a 5D III and a 1Dx but that's a little out of my range so for this question lets set the total budget to less than $8000 which is about what I spent on my 5D III and 1D IV combo since I bought one new (5D III + Grip) and one very lightly used (1D IV). I did question if I should just sell the two and buy a 1Dx and 7D since I want to have two cameras to use together about 25% of the time. Its fair to used pricing on current used cameras. i.e. I don't think anyone would spend the old list price for a 1DIV.

Share your thoughts and cast a different light on this if you want.

p.s Did say only Canon so lenses can be shared since some might say a D800 and a 1Dx to get the best of both brands but that about $10,000 any way.

I have the same two cameras and I see no need to upgrade to the 1dx. What are you hoping to gain?

P.S. Looking at your gearlist you are missing a 500/600 lens for birds.

looked at your gear list and if you still think you need something your gear lacking not sure what to say.

The only real gain I could see from a 1Dx and 5D III combo is having two cameras that share almost the exact same setup. Do stumble once in a while when going back and forth. I have them pretty much set up the same way now but sometimes have a misstep.

Had the same issue with a 7D/5D Mk II combo. That's why I even considered the 1Ds III instead of the 5D III to go with the 1D IV. Same battery, same menues, same buttons.

Now as far as my gear list I am definitely in pair down mode. Have determined how I want and will use primes and zooms. So the 24L II, 24-105, 200 f/2.8L, and possibly the 50L are headed to the Sell forum soon. I'd love to see Canon come out with a 14-24 like Nikon and then the 14L and 16-35L would be headed there too. Also thinking of holding off on the 24-70 Mk II although I pre-ordered it. Also, deciding which Marco I like better, 100mm or 180mm and keep only one. I do that a lot buy both (well priced, low usage used only) and then sell off the other.

Had an opportunity for a 400mm f/2.8L IS at a great price but the weight scares me and for that and the 500mm I'm not sure I would use them enough to justify the price tags.

So my goal would be to get to three zooms, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and then primes of TSE-24, 35, 85, 135, 300 and either 100 or 180 macro. Still a lot but a little less.

My current 2 body combo is pretty good (a pair of 1Dmk4)
The 1dx is an incredible camera though - I would love to have either a pair of 1dx or a 1dx and a mk4.

i think you've got the two best bodies currently, you could spend a chunk of change and not end up much better off than you are now.

7D and 1DX. 7D primarily for situations where the extra "Reach" is needed. Of course, as I write this I realize that anyone rich enough to indulge in such fantasies would prolly just buy an 800 mm f/5.6 Super Telephoto, if reach was ever an issue with the 1DX. So then, what is the purpose of the second camera? Ah hell, just get another 1DX to hold a second lens and call it a day!

There are cases, when doing some shooting I need to have two bodies, with different focal lengths. Mostly during sporting events when I use a long lens and 1D IV for the real in-game action and the 5D III is used for sideline activities and award stuff. The rest of the time I take one or the other for what it's best at. And believe it or not with all the super teles going for $5.5 K and up the two bodies was easier to swallow. If I can cull out 5 lens from my large collection I could probably look at a used 500mm

7D & 5D2. Maybe the 5D3 in the future.

Never had or used any 1D, but I really like my combo ... 7D & 5DMKII and/or 5DMKII & 5DMKII ... depending on what I will be shooting!

Suppose the future will be a pair of 5DMKIII's or its replacement but what I have now, I like very much! (just need more time to use them!!! )

Obviously a Crop and a Full Frame Body.

You realize that if you had an 800/5.6 a 7D would give you the reach of 1280. Or save the weight and use a 500 on the crop.

Get a digital medium format camera.
