I like this shot. Did you use a polarizer?

It's an attractive and interesting cloud, and I think it has the makings of a good photo. I have two suggestions:

First, the composition could be improved. Everything in the photo except for the cloud looks like a ho-hum daytime landscape. Because of the fairly wide field of view, it looks like a dull landscape that happens to have an interesting subject somewhere in it, rather than a great photo *of* the subject, if you see what I mean. I'd try cropping in closer to your subject, and particularly eliminate most of the foreground grass and some of the blue sky on the left side of the photo. This would have the added benefit of putting the cloud a little farther off-center.

Second, and this may be a matter of personal taste, I don't much care for the tonemapping. It causes all of the fine details to have little black outlines around them, which just isn't how the world looks. The deep blacks in the cloud just don't seem consistent with the lighting of the scene, which really takes me out of the photo.

One might also quibble about the uneven brightness of the blue parts of the sky, probably caused by using a polarizer with a wide-angle lens, but I think it works okay in this photo.

The cloud formation must have been quite a sight in person! We don't get many clouds like that where I live.

Yes plumgoo, I did use a polarizer. I was out running errands and had to stop to admire this formation. I looked in the bag and all I had was my 50/1.4 on camera and luckily I had a polarizer in the side pocket.

Ever since I got the 50/1.4 last month I have been consistently using it. My bag is not big enough for 5D2+50, and the 24-70 so I have been leaving my 'wide' lens at home .. man, I'd love to get a 16-35II but that would end in divorce :)

Yes, I agree the crop can be tightened, but I was so happy with the results of the day I posted as soon as I could :)
