well it happens, quick story.. When I was about 19 (9 years ago) my band at the time was working on our second studio album. Independantly funded. The four of us had spent the better part of 70 hours each in studio and our producer and sound engineer double that.. When he was doing the final mix the computer crashed and we lost everything. Unfortunately these things happen. If you have no success recovering I would offer a reshoot. Most people should understand and if they dont, give them their money back and bid them farewell, you wouldnt want them as clients anyways

Wow that's horrible...it sounds worse than my situation..thanks for your feedback!

If you accept money you NEED to sort out your workflow and incorporate a backup as the first step of it.

Here's the best of the bunch!

It's on Flickr with better quality though, I had to resize it to meet the requirements for the forums. (Is there anyway to get around that?

You can link the image from Flickr. In Flickr go to share and copy the BBcode for the image size you want to share.
On POTN when posting use the inset link icon (icon of the world and chain link) and paste the BBcode that you copied from Flickr.

Then you can preview the post to make sure it's linked properly.

Hope you don't mind (let me know if you're unhappy and I'll take it down). I linked your image to show the difference in image quality to what you had attached:D Nice shots BTW

Cheers, Paul.

If you are using a iPhoto on a Mac remember that for some reason iPhoto has its OWN Trash Can. Have a look in there. You never know your luck.

I got caught by this once as I was looking in the Trash in the dock.

Good luck

Natalie:

The good news is you'll only make this mistake ONCE! After transferring files from card to computer, the images are processed. I do NOT delete the images from the card until all images for a shoot are processed, completed and saved.

Then I'll reformat the card which deletes all raw files.

Think ahead. Be safe. Protect your work.

Also, in case it hasn't been mentioned.. the programs / software that comes with the Sandisk works with other cards. I (thought) I had transferred all my shots from a Lexar 400x speed CF card, spot checked and things looked good so I went to format the card and only the first ~50 or so images had actually been transferred. RescuePro (the software that comes with Sandisk cards) worked to get the rest of the images back. I was impressed.

The important thing is, make sure you don't shoot over the images you've deleted on the card in question (i.e I wouldn't even take a single shot if I were you with it) until you've exhausted your options trying to get the data back.

Also, I'm not sure how well this will work for SD cards or if there would be a difference, so I can't comment there.

Best of luck!

Natalie, I had a look through the gallery, were these a commercial shoot? There are loads of blown highlights and deep shadows, you really need to look at improving the lighting either by using fill or reflectors. There are a number with significantly missed focus too.

Sorry to hear about your situation OP but good to know it wasn't as bad as it originally sounded.

What cards specifically does the software come with? I bought some Sandisk CF cards recently and don't recall anything packaged with them.

Pretty much any Sandisk that indicates it comes with 1 year Rescue Pro or Rescue Pro Deluxe. Only includes the code, you have to download the software, but it says right on the packaging which ones it comes with. Probably Ultra and Extremes only but I could be wrong.

Blah, the back of the packaging from a 32GB Ultra SD card that happened to be hanging around says "Trial offer"...

I purchased two 16GB Ultra CF cards recently and tossed the packaging in the recycle right away. But I guess no loss there going by what's on the SD card.

I did a photo shoot earlier this week and downloaded all the files onto my computer and deleted all but about 20. They paid me $80 for this senior portrait photo shoot, and I turned on my computer just now to find that all of the photos on my computer have been deleted.

Given that you are new to this I hope you wont mind if I go right back to basics just to double check/eliminate potential issues. Computers don't delete files while they are turned off (unless you have a seriously messed up computer) the fact that the files were there when the computer was turned off and gone when it was turned back on could simply mean that the files aren't where you thought they were.

Are you 100% sure that you downloaded them to the correct directory and not to some other directory such as "downloads" (or something similar). I have seen lots of people over the years save files only to be unable to find them again when they return to their machine, because instead of saving it in their docs folder they saved it in temp or something similar.

Did you do a file search for all image files on your computer to ensure the images aren't actually tucked away in another directory somewhere?
