Hello all, just joined the forum and I'm sort of "new" in regards to taking Photography serious (as a hobby)

My current equipment
5DMK2
70-200, 24-105, 50

I have a safari trip coming up in two months and wanted to get the 16-35 for wide angle shots. I can't fork out the full $1500 for the lens so these are the two options I had in mind.

1. Sell my 24-105 then make up for the rest.
2. Keep my 24-105 and buy the 17-40

I know the 16-35 is a superior lens to the 17-40, and I like the fact that I get an extra stop. However I'm wondering if its a bad idea to get rid of my 24-105.

Thoughts?

I would get the 17-40 and keep the 24-105. You might think about renting something longer also.

Keep the 24 - 105, sell the 70-200, get a 100-400
Not sure how wide you'd need on a safari....surely 24 is enough
Think most of the posts I've read here users used the 100-400 on them

Btw nice lenses you have

This! Well sort of this!

But if you can figure a way (afford) to keep the 70-200 and get the long tele, do that. For instance rent the 100-400L for the safari. Take the long tele and not the 70-200. If you do rent, get the insurance for it.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

What makes the 16-35 superior to the 17-40 is mostly the extra stop, which is quite useful for event photography but not exactly necessary for landscape work. ;) If I were you I'd pick up a decent 17-40 used and rent something long, like a 500 or 600.
