As dorky as this seems, and I'm sure it seems really dorky. I'd like to start this type of thread to learn more about the people here on this board and how they approach photography. I think maybe a brief description of how you see yourself as a photographer and then post a sample of the type of photography you like to do. I don't mean your level of expertise or how good your gear is. I believe every photographer is like a painter, or sculptor, or any other artist. There are those who like lines... lots of them. There are those who are abstract, nature lovers, and those who love to capture man made things. I'll start it off by saying that I'm into capturing expression and emotion. I tend to pause before clicking the shutter for something natural to happen. Preferably something that causes a reaction driven by emotion. My example here is of my little girls. My baby to be exact. My oldest daughter Ashlee was playing with my youngest daughter Haylee, with a Christmas ornament and while I was watching them through the viewfinder for a spot of happiness to capture, I saw this. I'm sure you can tell who the main subject is and I'm pretty confident you know the emotion I'm trying to show. Comments, good or bad are welcome. But please feel free to contribute your own thoughts.

I'm all over the place. I like taking abstracts, city shots, landscapes, macros and people. I don't know if I could say I like to take any one type over any other. I guess you could say I just like to take shots of whatever catches my eye and impacts me. Now I just meed to practice more to get more good shots out of what I shoot.

Ever since I was given my first camera I have enjoyed taking pictures of people doing what they do. I like to take candid shots that show someone's personality the way I see it. The candid moments are what make up life in my opinion.

I show this image to a lot of people and have a copy hanging over my desk at home as well as one hanging over my desk at work. To me it sums up the way I see things right before I snap the picture.

It was taken at a birthday party while the photographer (a kid with a poloroid) was trying to line up all the kids for the group shot. This is the exact way I saw this picture before I even raised the camera up. Right down to the finger on the right pointing at the kid and telling him where to stand.

The thing I like the most about it is the fact that no matter how hard I try I will never be able to take this same picture again. It was a one time deal. If I hadn't been watching it would have been lost forever.

I like your photos. Interestingly enough, I have shot other things as well and I too have a dartboard shot. It's a bit different than yours... Maybe I'll post it up.

Sam, I've seen your photo before and it never gets old. I couldn't agree more about catching the moment.

My 10D is always within grabbing distance and I don't let many good moment pass me by. I love taking pictures of my sons, they are my models, of course. I love old buildings, mountains, sunsets and sports shots. I do weddings but I don't love that. I do love children and that is my specialty. Your description was good. I like expressions and feelings too. Nothing like my two young boys jumping into a pile of leaves and capturing that moment in mid-air. That's what photography is all about for me.

Took me forever to get that dart board shot right, and I'm still not quite completely satified with it. had a hard time getting the focus the way I wanted it. I was trying to keep the darts fully in fucus while bluring the numbers. Ended up getting close, and then the title came to me. Missed! The bull and the focus. :)

Tough question Forkball! I guess I am a people photographer thru and thru. I LOVE shooting people. Location work is my favorite with angles that try to move away from the norm. I dont like stuff that seems staged or posed. DOF is my weapon and low level fill flash is my savior. I think this pic about sums up what I am all about. My pro photog friends say, " Shoot kids from their level!" "You want to have their whole heads in focus'.... Well I have always been a rule breaker and hate the boring and mondane. Hopefully I have captured some thing unusual created from a different perspective. So, here is in graphical form, what I have a hard time describing.

I prefer people but I am known to take a photo of anything. I shoot weddings at my own discretion, engagement photos, newborns, families & landscape.

But my favorite subject is my grandson. Most everyone knows that :)

I am also not real fussy about every tiny detail. I don't think I could enjoy it as much. I like to capture moments and emotions. To me, that is what makes a picture special.... not the perfect lighting or pose.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I'm the "Wannabe" type. I daydream about covering car shows and sports and industry and socials (strictly for fun, fame and fortune of course).

I only discovered photography less than 2 months ago. I am trying to learn everything I can so that hopefully I can give back some day. I travel all over the south pacific and some places in South East Asia and have alot of stories but very little phtographs. I spent a month in Cambodia last year, had a digital point and shoot and after coming back from visiting some great temples in low light situations and the none of the photos turned out, I decided I needed to learn more. I also want to learn for my children.

I wanted to get into wedding & portrait photography for the money...after all it IS what really pays. But alas, I suck. I'll do weddings and portraits more and more as my skills improve but in the meantime I get action. I shoot at a local dirt race track, selling prints as some of the income, while the track itself pays me to write up race summaries and provide a couple snaps for their website.

Also shot for a local paper but we parted on bad terms...they were selling 8x10s of my submitted photos without copyright permission.

PS: I just got my first dSLR (or SLR in general) 6 months ago...
