I have found a location about 10 minutes from home that has a group of at least four kingfishers in the area, possibly siblings from earlier this year. I finally managed to get a few shots this a.m., but many of them seemed a bit soft (possibly due to having IS on while using the monopod?)
Here are the best I managed. I'll be going back to try again, of course ;)

100-400? Very well done, Mike! And like a cat returns to where it found its last mouse, you shall return! I would expect nothing else! :)

Those are GREAT shots. Not to get too far off topic but, what is the issue of using the monopod and IS?

Congrats, Mike! :) Not an easy bird to get good shots of, and you got some crackers!

MONOpod shouldn't make a difference for IS; you've still got movement going on when using a monopod that the IS can help with. It's a TRIpod you should consider turning the IS off for.

Edit #2: You should try throwing it into IS mode 2, however.

Thanks, I'll give that a try next time, and may even try a few without any IS to hit all the bases. I was sitting on a small stool and had the monopod quite steady. As I was probably only around 30-40 feet from the bird, I was really expecting sharper results than I got...all the more reason to go back and try again.

If your EXIF is accurate (I always wonder about it) you were 18.1 metres, or almost 60 feet! Still pretty close.

Great series Mike. You're fortunate to have found a location where they are somewhat approachable.

You might want to try some selective sharpening, of the bird only, on a couple images that you find soft.

Really...? Huh, seemed a lot closer than that, next time I'm there I'll take a closer look.
