Should be announced in a few days at Photokina. IMO, this camera could be huge in the same way that the Fuji X series was. Compact, FF sensor, and nice lens...like a poor man's Leica M9.

The upcoming Full Frame RX1 will use the same 24 Megapixel sensor of the A99 and be priced at $2799. Like the A99 it has 14 bit RAW and ISO range from 100 up to 25.600. Shoots 5 fps and It makes video in AVCHD 2.0. The body is made of magnesium but it is not weather sealed. It has the same A99 3 inch screen but without the smart three way tilting system. I have been told there will be many accessories including optical and electronic viewfinders!

Looks to be about the same size as Micro 4/3 (I didn't make the picture):

Fullframe with a fixed lens? That's a real missed opportunity from Sony, sure 35mm would make a nice walkaround lens, but at the same time limiting (I would not take it on a far trip for example)

The price is rather steep too, for this price you can buy a FF DSLR. in this highly competitive market you can't just slap on a high pricetag and call it highend. ie is it really necessary to try and "compete" with Leica?

So close now... Affordable small compact FF = Yay! :)
Too bad about the fixed lens, but this is at least a step in the right direction.

The problem is that there isn't a lineup of FF compatible lenses to begin with. Utilizing an adapter and then use the existing lineup of A-mount lenses isn't practical either. I suspect this is the start of Sony's plans to eventually have a NEX-like FF system.

Releasing a fixed lens camera just because the lenses aren't ready, is IMO a halfarsed solution. If Sony wanted to do things right, they should have gone all the way. Now they just crammed a big sensor into a compact sized body. What's so revolutionary about that? The RX1 is just as expensive as their flagship DSLR model, BUT lacking the viewfinder and controls. Not to mention the ergonomics, I really wonder how many people end up keeping their RX1 after the hype dies down.

How is this a half ass solution? That's like saying the Fuji X100 was a half ass solution.

I think so, the X100 was only released by Fuji to test the market (for the demand of a high end retro looking camera) On design and IQ wise the X100 is hard to beat, but handling and AF is/was awful: I hated using my X100. it took Fuji almost a year worth of firmware upgrades to "fix" the X100 and before we knew the XPRO1 was released.

Now Sony on the other hand already knows there's a market for a large sensor ILC and have been rather successful with their NEX line, IMO there's no reason to release the RX1 as gap fill model.

This looks more like a 'proof-of-concept' design than anything else.

Now that Leica has shown its hand with a 24MP sensor. Sony could make a killing if they put their 36MP sensor into a mirrorless body, with a Leica M mount capable of taking Zeiss M and Leica M lenses (they are, after all, partnered up with Zeiss). Sony isn't, and never will be, a lens company, but they can make a killing selling M-mount compatible bodies, as well as sensors for other people's cameras (possibly with the stipulation that those sensors not go into M-mount-compatible bodies, in order to protect their own product), just like Sigma and Zeiss make a killing selling lenses for Canon, Nikon, M4/3 and other cameras, without really being camera companies themselves.

The lens itself is worth $1k easily, I don't think $1500 for the camera would be possible. Perhaps in a few more years.
