Earlier this year I was on location with The Beards shooting promo for their upcoming run of press.

Now, if you know of the band the following brief will not read as anything out of the ordinary!

The brief:

The idea is to have the guys in a 1950′s style garage, rockabilly vibe. Dressed as mechanics and working on a very manly car. I have access to a garage, I dont know if it would be the right vibe though. We can hire a car or have a look around for a lender.

Basically all the shots are of the band doing manly things. Some will be straight mechanicy shots working on cars, etc. But we’d also be doing other manly things in the garage aswell – cooking a BBQ / roasting a pig on a spit, using a jackhammer, drinking booze, lifting weights, etc.

Here’s some of the shots the guys ended up running with.

See if you can list the lighting (as least for this first one).

Full set over at my site:

Facey McStubblington needed a profile shot for the Maton website where he recently landed a nice endorsement, so after the shoot wrapped we stepped outside and I shot this.

Anyone want to take a stab at how I lit it and what settings I shot at?

Remember, it’s outside with no “studio backdrop” of any kind, in fact in the background of the shot was the garage shed we did the main shoot in.

No post work (except the conversion to b/w):

I saw the Beards at the Apollo Bay Festival and they sure know how to put on a show. There was a lot of homoerotic facial hair rubbing and girls feeling up sweaty men's beards.

Love the promo shots. The first one is really funny though the dude looking up sorta looks like he missed the vibe of it?

That profile shot is excellent. I've only ever used a pop up flash so I have no idea how you'd do that. Well done.

Great shots! Love the chicken and blow torch. :-)

I am coming to Australia the last half of November. I am flying in to Sydney on Nov 14 and staying in Wollongong for a few days hanging out with Jason Cole while I decompress and figure out what to do. I expect to shoot a couple of weddings with him. I will fly out of Sydney on the 29th. I expect to drive to Melbourne to visit Richard Sharman (who used to be on POTN). Would love to drive up the coast to Adelaide but I'm not sure there will be time. It is my first trip off North America and my first "Solo" trip and my wife decided to limit how long I could be on my own ... it may sound silly but she knows me better than I do! :-) I'll try to be in touch from Jason's if nothing else.

Beauty Dwight :)

Although, it looks like I'll be in USA early November until December, but will have to clarify closer, otherwise your should slot some time if you can come to Adelaide that would be great.
