I too got a Tamron 28-75 2.8 last week. We have taken several pictures and love the quality from it. Glad to see you are going to enjoy it.

Like Solinger, though, I learned with a 50mm prime lens which I used almost exclusively when I shot film. I'm slowly building my collection of primes, as I prefer them for both sports and portraiture. The 200L should be finding it's way to my house sometime next week!

Depth of field can be quite shallow and your subject has only got to move a little bit to throw focus off. I hate to think how long it takes to master an f1.4 lens but maybe one day I'll enjoy finding out. The 70-200 f4L matches nicely with the Tamron - same 67mm filter, both excellent quality, reasonably compact. You miss out totally on wide angle though. There's always the kit lens at 18mm or I dished out for a Tokina 12-24. Enjoy taking lots of beautiful shots of your girlfirend when you next catch up. G5, 30D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Canon 70-200 f/4L, Kenko 1.4x and 420EX.

Or does it really depending on what you are shooting? I've not really noticed. It looks pretty sharp to me all the time.
