Last month my wife and I participated in a Holy Land Tour of Israel and Jordan. It was a very informative trip a historical and religious focus.

While my normal bird photography activities were not really available to me, I was fortunate enough to see a few life list additions during the 10 days we were there.

Over 500 species of birds have been reported from Israel which is a major migratory flyway for 500 million birds twice a year.

The Palestine Sunbird is a species native to the Middle East including Israel. I photographed these feeding on the nectar of flowers. As you will note the males are the more colourful of the two sexes. Most of these shots were taken under extremely low light conditions.

1. Female feeding on nectar

2. Male on Bird of Paradise.

3. Clear view of the female's long curved bill

4. My favourite image of a male

Wonderful shots, Stephen. Based on plumage, I never would have guessed that the male and female are the same species.

I'm guessing that you said that it is a bee.

Congratulations Stephen! An amazing trip it must have been and in so many ways.
The bill is such a spectacle. How much bigger than Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are these lovely creatures.

My favorite is yours favorite of the male. He is stunning!

Thanks Lil. It was an amazing trip. These birds are bigger than R-T hummers and about the size of our Brown Creepers.

Beautiful shots, that last one is terrific, great colours! And you have answered my question in the other post about whether you're still there now :)
