I purchased an OLY E-PL2 from Costco. It was $300, so I figured that camera with the kit lens would give me high quality photos at a premium point-and-shoot cost. I bought it with the intention of it complementing my DSLR, and did not really plan on "buying into the system" by getting more lenses.

I got it about a month ago and it mostly collects dust. The only times I've shot with it was just to try it out. When I really want to actually take photos, I've taken my XSi and now my new 60D. I find that increasingly what I've been doing is if I know I want to take photos, then I don't mind lugging the 60D. And in any other situation, my iPhone 4S produces nice acceptable snapshots.

The E-PL2 produces terrific pictures imo, but is definitely not "compact". It's smaller/ lighter than a DSLR setup, but not pocketable. It's no more or less convenient then carrying around the XSi with a small lens (like the nifty fifty) attached, although the E-PL's lens is a zoom so gives me more flexibility.

So I'm a bit torn here. I can return it and apply that money towards a new lens (I've been thinking of the 35mm f/2 or maybe the 40mm pancake which I could attach to the XSi and use as a walkaround type setup). But then again it's an inexpensive (relatively speaking) fairly convenient camera that takes terrific pictures, so maybe I should keep it around? Maybe I'm missing something or an obvious scenario when I'd miss the E-PL2 that I'm not thinking of right now?

To me, a camera you don't feel inspired to use is not a good fit for YOU. There are many who absolutely love the E-PL2, but if you won't reach for the camera, its not as good a use of your money as a lens for a camera you WILL use.
I've been eyeing the EM5 more and more seriously over the past month+ but the price is definitely tougher to swallow than the EPL2 you got.

I think the 35 or 40 would be a better fit in your case :)

Try the 40mm pancake to see if it floats your boat ... I got one, like it, still learning it, but think it will find a permanent place in my kit.
For a pocket P&S I carry an old Canon Elph for pics when I'm not carrying my kit ... I also have a Canon S90 when I know I'm going to have pic opportunities but don't want to carry the larger kit. I don't have an iPhone (or similar) and don't plan to get one so this solution works for me. If I'm going to carry a compact camera then it needs to fit comfortably in my pocket; otherwise I'll carry my 50D plus a few lenses for my photos.

As for mirrorless ... I'm interested in seeing/holding the new Canon mirrorless when it's introduced ... since I could potentially use all my existing lens it might be another "compact" solution ... just don't know until I see it/try it. But I suspect that if I eventually go into mirrorless I will prefer to stay within the Canon system.

Thanks, I've been considering the 40mm as something a bit wider than the 50mm that hopefully gives me a bit more options indoors, but more importantly I've been thinking it would make a great walkaround setup attached to my very compact (for a DSLR) XSi. My wife shoots 100% with the XSi+ 50mm, so I think she would love the XSi with the 40

I would also guess that the "optional" EVF viewfinder would only add to the size and the cost of this camera. However, if this camera had been out, I would probably have purchased it for my wife instead of the hundred dollar Canon P&S camera I did buy...

The 40mm Pancake lans would make a small package combined with an xxxD camera but, I would feel quite constrained with its betwixt and between focal length. Looking at the focal lengths I most often use on my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens, I seldom shoot anyway near 40mm. If Canon had brought this out in 30MM I'd have grabbed one! That would have ben great as a normal lens for a 1.6x camera and a wide angle lens on a full-framer...
