Chrisa I see used a different piece of the ball and screw (Chrisa's has the plate), mine on the other hand, is just a ball with a 1/4-20 screw extruding from it. Just a factual difference.

They were out of the ball only when I ordered mine so that's why I have the ball with the plate.

as I said - a factual difference and not a functional one.
or at least I would surmise as such.
after looking at your set up I was thinking that you might get a bit more stability (and weight) from the plate - so maybe it has its own benefits.....

I have ordered the Ram parts (hopefully the right ones!!).

I went to a local metal dealer who will fabricate the "C" bracket for $20. I am using 1/4" steel (which should be strong enough?) It will be up to me then to polish and make things look nice - maybe get it anodized black?. Hopefully it all turns out well.

A single light weight speedlight such as the 270EX or EX II will do just fine, but just don't expect it to be as powerful as the twin flash.

Many of my friends use the 270EX for their macro photography. You can either use the Mount Ring /Tripod Collar or lens hood to hold your flash. See this post:
