Once I shipped my 120-300mm f2.8 non OS and USPS lost it. It was priority mail insured. Took then 10-15 days to find it. They won't even do anything unless 7-8 days go by after the scheduled delivery date.

I second this. USPS has, on a couple of occasions, left a package at my neighbors because the carrier didn't want to leave it in the open. My neighbor has a gated courtyard, so I think the carrier assumed I would want it left there.

The last time he did this, the package was marked "Delivered" on the online Delivery Confirmation, and my neighbor waited a couple of days before bringing it over! We were pretty confused during that time, and it was my daughter's Xmas present, so we were anxiously waiting for it. I think one of his kids might have taken it inside and not told the parents or something.

Anyway, there's at least a dozen explanations, and I wouldn't jump to the worst case scenario yet.

Is there any chance you could speak to the carrier? Maybe he remembers what he did with the package.

Call your local USPS delivery station and have the postmaster identify the carrier on your route and inquire about delivery ... or lack thereof.

Happens to my wife all the time. Carriers can only deliver what they have. There is also a possibly that a scanning error took place making it look like the package appeared delivered.

My guess is NOT delivered and it'll get there. USPS isn't real good with the important stuff like information management, but they usually deliver packages with the best of 'em.

Bummer, I'd hate to screw the seller if I was you though. If nothing comes of it and you can't get money from the post office I'd recommend getting half your money back and the both of you can chalk it up to a life lesson, always get insurance, always.

Sellers loss, plain and simple. Paypals guidelines for sellers suggest UPS or FedEx, insured, with signature for anything over $250. Insurance protects the seller, not the buyer.

I've had this problem several times after moving to where I live now. Packages that have obviously been opened, high dollar items left at my door, low dollar ($5) items I've had to sign for, etc.. One package was delivered 15 days after tracking said it had been delivered. I had to file a claim on USPS's website for that one.

Good luck getting your camera, I hope it works out for you.

Back in December I purchased my Canon T2i from Amazon and opted to have free shipping. Amazon shipped it out by USPS. I waited 7 days (including weekends) but did not get my package. I waited longer thinking that it was busy holiday season but I still did not get my camera after 12 days.

Tracking info shows that it is at some city (I forgot the name of the city) but the info never got updated for 12 straight days. So I contacted Amazon. They overnight a replacement camera and it arrived the next morning. Where did the original order go? Somehow I think someone somewhere has a nice Christmas gift.

Btw, USPS mail person sometimes tosses packages that don't fit in the mailbox into my balcony (I live in a condo). They can't get in because it is a gated community. My unit happens to be by the entrance. Anyone who sees them tossing something can easily climb over the fence to get into the balcony to steal packages. Fortunately it has never happened (yet).

I have no tolerance for mail. It's outdated, like fax machines. Always go UPS, double insured, shipped to a business address if you can, and track it ever inch of the way- soon as you see an "exception" or if it happens to land in Cache, Illinois, time to put on a gruff lawyerly voice and start banging away at 'em!

I've had this same problem happen with EVERY SINGLE CARRIER that delivers to my house and it's also happened almost everywhere I had lived. I've received other people's packages and I've have my packages delivered to the wrong house. No carrier is immune. Using UPS or FedEx or Ontrac (may be regional) instead of USPS, it is still bound to happen eventually. Usually it is just delivered to one of your neighbors (so go around and ask everyone within a couple houses of you at least). But, I've also had packages from an entirely different street delivered to my house.

Lesson learned: Always insure the delivery unless it is something you are willing to eat. A missing package is just a matter of time.

Sometimes the package will show up the next day after it was marked to be delivered

We've got the other extreme down here, the courier guys won't ever leave the package unless it's signed for, they ask for you for your full name to match the package name and then put it in the handheld with your electronic signature. If you miss a delivery twice you have to pick it up at the post office or depot when you need photographic id etc.etc.etc.

If you must use the USPS, I suggest using REGISTERED MAIL. It is the only US Mail service that kept under lock and key, and signed for, at every step of its journey. Insurance is included and signature delivery is available. It is SLOW, but it is secure.

I once had a $400 tent I ordered from REI lost. Post office said delivered, but it wasn't at my house. REI refunded me no questions asked. They said they would put the liability on the USPS.....
