So, I'm interested in a fisheye lens. I admit, I'm a Canon guy through and through. But, I took a quick look at the Sigma 8mm on B&H's website as it came up first on the list.

The Sigma is 8mm, the Canon is 15, but both give 180 degree view.

Is the Sigma a wider view? What gives here? Thanks

While both are 180* fisheyes (the following applies to FF or 24x36mm format) the 15mm is 180* only on the horizonal plane and the frame is filled. The 8mm is a "full fisheye" and therefore captures a full circle of 180*.

Actualy the 15mm is *diagonal* 180; the 8mm is circular (you get massive vigneting in the shape of a circle :D )

You could try a Peleng 8mm ! Best price/performance ratio in town ! :D

I was going to suggest the same. Personally, I would use this kind of specialised lens only now and again so I'd question myself as to why I'd sink big bucks when very good quality can be had for a friendly price. I'm sure Master Buze is too modest to link to his own sample shots. Looks a very good prospect and ... damn, it's more fun using this kind of MF option than the same old same old stuff:

i almost bought the pelong 8mm
but was persuaded otherwise by people scaring me with the 'hitting the mirror preoblem'

Here is one of the articles that I read on the Peleng. It is informative. The mirror slap section is worth considering. On many of the 1.6 crop cameras they have a smaller mirror, so this shouldn't matter. The 1DM2 has a full sized mirror though. It might not be an issue, but it is worth considering. I have read of a couple of people who have used it on the 1DM2, but I have also read that the tolarance level that they build this lens to can vary a fair amount.

The Canon 15 is a damn good lens though. I loved it when I got to use it for half a year, except always being in fear of scratching the front element.

Obviously these were on my 10D, so you'd get a different look.

My favorite photo with it: http://img.photobucket.com …yPhotography/CRW_5787.jpg (external link)

Is noisy little bugger though. If it had USM, I'd say that lens would be perfect, but then the price wouldn't be as kind.

i saw this lens too and was amazed out how "fishy" it is. Maybe a lil to much for me.

Here is the pbase with pics.

The Peleng works on the Canon bodies, only the Noinks have problems clearing it.

However, if/when I get a full frame, I'll probably get the 16mm Zenitar for it (thats full frame fishy); 8mm circular fisheye is a bit too much vigneting for my taste :D
On the other hand, a "full frame" 15,16mm fishy on a crop camera is "not enough"; it's barely fishy at all ! :D
Here's my Peleng:
