While shooting football for the local news paper last week my 300 2.8 started having focusing issues. The problem is intermittent and AF will in most cases start working again if the focus ring is activated or if you lightly tap on the side of the lens. I am wondering if it’s a possible connection issue at the AF motor or a motor going out. The lens is an older unit with a date code of UJ1223.

Can anyone recommend a lens repair facility in the US that still works on these older lenses that are no longer supported by Canon. I think the lens could be repaired from a technical standpoint however the big issue will be parts availability.

Unfortunately I was just getting ready to add some new equipment possibly the 1D X or the 400 2.8, however it looks like I will be replacing the broken 300 2.8 instead of adding the additional gear. If anyone can recommend a lens repair facility I would certainly appreciate the input.

You can try these guys: http://www.midwestcamera.com/ (external link)

There is at least one other repair shop in the US that specializes in discontinued gear, I can't remember who though, I am sure someone else will come up with it.

Billy,

Thanks for the information. I sent them an email this morning and received a reply already and an affordable repair might be possible.

Have you used Midwest Camera for repairs? Does anyone else have any experience with Midwest Camera they would like to share? Thanks again Billy I really appreciate the help!

No first hand experience, when I bought my 500 4.5 L (also discontinued), the previous owner mentioned he had them service and clean the lens.

Midwest Camera Repair did repair my 300 2.8 non IS and so far it's working great. Here are a few images I posted in Zivnuska's thread from the repaired lens. I would recommend Midwest Camera Repair and I would use them again.

Did they tell you what the problem was? That info might help other folks that run into the same (or a similar) issue.

Wonderful. I love my 300/2.8L Non-IS. I know I could eventually have an issue but for now it is working great. Wonderful lens.
