Hello all!

Just for fun. Modded out my Mark IV sometime ago with a different filter. Same lens (different focal length to compensate for crop factor) 70-200 2.8L EF IS II. Same shutter speeds, iso, etc. Critically focused manually using 10x liveview.

Processed using CS5.

Enjoy.

Another pic. Look at the vent dots in the upper area of the pic. Filter I'm using is by astrodon. Good stuff.

How do you modify the AA filter with another one on a 1d4? I figured you wouldn't have just removed it? no? Where did you get this other AA filter for the 1d4?

maybe it's just me but the pictures they use to show the difference doesn't look like that much of an improvement, if any. But the pics the OP showed in this thread are remarkable.

Anyone do this to their 7D? I'd be interested in doing it also once I saw some better sample images

wow, dramatic improvement. I too would need to see some better examples, but I might just try this once I get the 5DIII. I wonder if they can return the camera back to stock if a customer doesn't like the results.

Their examples other than the air-conditioner and street stones, don't do much to show the effect but it think they are also showing that in it's the fine detail that's affected. Most of the picture will be the same.

Just for fun. Modded out my Mark IV sometime ago with a different filter.

Was your mod done by the company that has been mentioned in this thread, or did someone else do it, and if so is it the same filter used by this LDP LLC MaxMax company?

Thanks.

Why compare "equal sharpening"? Why not compare highest level of sharpening each can take for a real world example?

The filter that is used is not by maxmax. It's a scientific grade Astrodon filter. Basically allows much more of the red spectrum to come through along with a brickwall filter from 400 to 700nm. Astrodon is good for 1/4 wave smooth finish and has state of the art coatings. Zero halos on astronomy images and point sources. The rest of the filter mfgrs can't say that.

Stock filter assembly on the 1d4/5d3/5d2/1dsm3 is ultra thin. 0.3mm thin. Easily shattered. It's held in place by a very aggressive adhesive surrounding the imaging chip itself. The new filter (astrodon) is a bit thicker and has a different index of refraction. Not an issue if you use the microfocus adjustment.

Since the images are highly compressed on the board, the differences are highly toned down. You can print up the pics on a 5x7 and there will be significant amounts of detail in the modded AA version.

Tkbslc - the sharpening on the stock filter will break down after a certain amount. I wanted to keep things a bit more even. The modded AA (removal of) can go insanely sharp. And it's only a mere 16mp image vs the 21mp.

Considering the OP's mention of the name "Astrodon", the reference seems to be to this:
