I only have about 18K clicks on my 5 year old 40D. I was shooting the other day and had a err99, thought the CFcard was full, put in a new one and it worked fine. Today it didn't work at all. Here's what it's doing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lps8IcB-8o (external link)

Has anyone had similar issues and dealt with Canon? Since it's out of warranty they say it has to be checked out before they give me a cost estimate... Anyone had a similar issue and care to share what it cost to fix?

Bad shutter..?
That looks like a bad shutter issue/error, but TYPICALLY the mirror would move even if the shutter was bad...
Since the mirror is not moving, it could be:
the mirror box
drive motor(the mirror and shutter share the same motor IIRC)
or it is just a coincidence that the mirror is not moving..

I hear a click, but nothing moves..
most times, to me, that would mean that something broke off, as in the little "arm" that the shutter is moved with..is there a rattle inside the camera?(more so than what would normally be heard)

I have done shutter repairs to several 40Ds, and it only cost me $50 for the new shutter...
but, if you send it to Canon, I would expect a bill of ~$200-230 or so..and it will be done right, or everything will be checked out..so I will always recommend using Canon service for things like this..

But, at ~$230, is it even worth it..? I think I would look into Canon CLP with it, or at the very least look around at other service centers for possibly lower cost(Toshio, Pro Camera Repair, etc, I have no affiliation or experience with anyone other than Canon Service Centers...)..

Tough luck..sorry!

Hope you get it back up and running.. :)

My 50d had a shutter problem, and it gave an Error 30, so I don't know if this is something slightly different, or at least the camera might not actually know what's wrong!

Error 99 has several potential causes and these are the steps that Canon recommends to isolate the cause. Follow them carefully or you might not get good info on the cause. For instance, right after step 5 you retest the camera without a lens attached and no memory card. If you get the error at that point it is likely a camera issue needing repair. If you don't get the error, then you proceed to clean the lens contacts and mount a lens...

Again follow directions for the best info on the real problem.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.

That is exactly what happened to my 40D last summer. Was recommended a camera repair place in the midwest as they were supposed to be cheaper than Canon. Can't remember their name. Talked to the tech there and after describing the symptoms, he estimated it would cost $300. Had the camera insured through State Farm and when I called them and told them what the tech said, the just issued me a check and I bought a 60D.

Name of the place was United Camera in Bensensville, Ill. They have a website if you are interested: UnitedCamera.com The $300 quote was for shutter repair and mirror box.

I believe there is an internal 'date' battery separate from the obvious battery you use and charge all the time. I would investigate and replace that before I shipped it off to the repair shop.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.
