Looking to do a little photo work on the Night Sky. Having the T3i, I'm wondering on which lenses that would fit the bill. (An average lens that will do the job?)

Thanks.

With my T1i and kit lens 18-55mm I've taken quite a few wide field (18mm) shots of the milky way.

You don't need a f2.8 specifically, examples here with lens/settings/etc

I've had good results with the 24-70 Mk I at f/2.8 on my 5D2, but as mentioned in the above you can capture the MW with the kit lens.

None of the pictures in that link were taken with tracking, tripod + DSS or Tripos & single exposure.

If you are going to buy a new lens and you are looking at "L" glass, take a look at the Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21mm ZE

Dollar for dollar this is the best wide angle lens that I have ever used. It's manual focus but when you dial it to the infinity stop it's at infinity. It's so sharp I may have to start wearing eye protection when I use it. Color is better too.
