I have a 60d with a 18-135 standard zoom lens. I am looking to upgrade my lens and I am not sure which direction to go. I tend to shoot nature, street scenes and outdoors a lot but every now and then I have paying gigs for publications, usually indoors of people receiving awards. I also find myself cropping my photos a lot. I do find myself trying to shoot closer to subjects (just because that's how I used to shoot with my old P&S) so I am still learning (or relearning) how to shoot. I'm not sure if I should be looking at something like the 70-200 or something that is geared towards macro like the sigma 17-70 macro or maybe some other lens that I don't even know about. I'm pretty sure I don't want a prime lens as I find myself constantly zooming in to capture the bug on a leaf and then zooming out to capture the sun setting behind the mountains then zooming back to capture the fence line, etc.

I am leaving for a trip in a week and half for the mountains and was thinking about renting a lens before buying.

Any and all input, suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated as I am feeling pretty overwhelmed at this moment.

Also, budget is not an issue, as I will probably do the irresponsible thing and put it on my credit card ;)

Laura,

Here is one of the threads for the 60D: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1198754

You'll find those of us who frequent that thread have different ideas on which lenses are the best, as you would expect, but if you take a look at the "signatures", most of us have our gear listed. I have the 15-85 for landscapes and indoor shoots using a flash and the 70-300L for birds, butterflies, etc. You can find interesting posts from those using the 70-300L here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=955129 and the 15-85 here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=760140

I do plan on adding a 100L macro to my kit before the end of the year. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=760368
Have fun with your search and purchase.
