Hey ALL

I just applied for my first media pass for a professional paintball event in Florida. I was wondering what you guys think the best lens to shoot in this situation ? Looking for something under $1500.00. I will be using a canon 5d mark 2. I am a bit of a newbie in the photography aspect cause I do mostly film work with my camera. thanks for your help. The field dimensions are 120' x 170' but I will be another 10ft back from there.

Who are you shooting the event for? What equipment do you already have?

I would think that a 70-200 lens would be the standard, with a 1.4x teleconverter being fairly common, and possibly a 300mm or 400mm lens being fairly valuable as well.

With that budget, and since you're shooting during the day, you best lens would be the Canon 100-400 L. You can get a nice used one in that price range and that lens will produce razor sharp images.

The 5DII will be the down size due to it's limiting AF, but while the players are stationary you should be able to get some great shots.

Shooting World Cup, huh?

From what I've seen and spoken to most guys I see on the sidelines at PSP events (I've played MAO and Chicago this year) about, the "gold standard" seems to be a 70-200.. Though I have seen many others.

I think Gary from Paintball PHotography and Chris from Chris Loh Media browse these forums too, so they'd be much more qualified than I.

Edit: You may also want to post on PBNation...

if you can afford it, a 300 2.8 or even 4 on one body a 70-200 on another and bring a wide angle or fisheye for those in pit shots and creative ones too.

Ill personally have a similar setup to what i just mentioned. PM me if you have any questions, this aint my first rodeo :P

I'll be there playing in D3, can't wait!!!!

From what I've seen at national events 70-200 is pretty standard as people have said, but a 300 wouldn't be a bad choice either

You might consider the 70-300 L. I just bought one myself for shooting softball. My initial tests look like it is as sharp or sharper than the 70-200 f/4 it replaced.

Until the end of the month they are $200 off. Amazon has them for $1399. Canon had some refurbs for a grand but I just checked and they are all gone.
