You guys post the most awesome surf pics, hands down. But c'mon guys, not one shot of the beach honeys at Huntington this week.

Your killing me...:p

BIFs are generally posted in the so-cal thread.

Nice, Pat! I caught him prior to the finals. He's a lot of fun to watch. I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever seen him. Lots of energy!

I've just been look over this thread for the past 10 minutes, I would love to see less zoom, for some shots, so you can get an appreciation for the waves and the environment.

I agree, the waves can definitely add to the impact of the photos. Those of us shooting in Southern California regularly see very small waves and on those days I tend to shoot very tight.

When we do get to enjoy larger waves you certainly want to include those. If you saw the photos earlier in this thread from "The Wedge", then you've seen what I'm talking about. Those are often the biggest waves I see all year although I'm not at the beaches constantly.

At this year's US Open of Surfing the waves were decent earlier in the week but unfortunately the ocean turned somewhat flat during the final weekend. A little disappointing because the contest attracts some of the best surfers from around the world. Great publicity and a $100,000 first place paycheck. You want to see them work their stuff on big waves!

He's not referencing shots from a housing. I believe he means that instead of shooting with a 400mm with an extender and being close up on the surfer that he'd like to see some shots pulled back a bit so we can get some perspective on the wave, the environment.

Being able to pull in a background and show more than just a cutback or a turn adds a story to the photo.

That is definitely a valid thought. I don't post too many of my shots here (due to time) and have a better variety on my Instagram for instance. But yeah sometimes there just isn't anything pretty in the background - US Open shots for example - whitish/grayish haze fog haha not even blue sky ;-)a
