Those of us shooting in Southern California regularly see very small waves and on those days I tend to shoot very tight.

I believe he means that instead of shooting with a 400mm with an extender and being close up on the surfer that he'd like to see some shots pulled back a bit so we can get some perspective on the wave, the environment.

I don't post too many of my shots here (due to time) and have a better variety on my Instagram for instance. But yeah sometimes there just isn't anything pretty in the background - US Open shots for example - whitish/grayish haze fog haha not even blue sky http://www.paradigmphotographyoc.com
