For action the tight cropping seems to be the norm - if there is a beautiful sunset, tropical scenery or amazing set line ups rolling through and you can incorporate that from your vantage point - cool. MarkII has lots of shots like that in this thread.

But if its just a backed out shot of a surfer on average sized waves taking up a small part of the frame it looks a bit snapshot-y, in my opinion, though I'm no definitive expert. I have also found tight cropping hides "flaws" like smaller/crappier waves and crowded conditions.

Definitely interested in what others think about this?

If you leave it on time lapse still, you will get a lot better quality image.
