Mar 10, 2013 19:21 | #618 Any tips on shooting in generally backlit conditions? Shooting in RI I always thought it was just the time of day, but I spent Friday and Saturday shooting all day. No matter what time of day everything was backlit. Unless people are out first thing in the morning or right before sunset its nearly impossible to get decent shots.

When the light gets sketchy try moving down the beach in the direction that allows you to shoot at some an angle from the sun. Any angle better than the sun directly behind your subject is a significant improvement. doofuss wrote in post #15709609 Heading off to Indo in 3 weeks time so hopefully I will have some good pics to share when I get back. Insane day to be at spectating, the noise from the crowd was unbelievable... Especially with Parko being the hometown finalist. Kelly's 9.83 was off the chain in his final, guy completely dissapeared and everyone went "oohhh" in harmonic dissapointment... 2 seconds later he appears like magic and everyone just completely loses it. My videos are probably my better work... http://www.youtube.com/user/AlecMcJoPhotography

Excuse the camera shake, I really should have taken a gyro mount. Kiss Me I'm Irish

When the light gets sketchy try moving down the beach in the direction that allows you to shoot at some an angle from the sun. Any angle better than the sun directly behind your subject is a significant improvement. At the spots I shoot at here in OC, we have to shoot looking north west toward our subjects to get the best light in the mornings. From noon until about golden hour its pretty nasty and backlit, but at some spots you can get some nice warm tones that last hour the sun is up, when shooting looking south west. Obviously this is going to be different for you on the east coast, but all that to say that all surf photographers have to work with the sun position, not sure of any way around that. You can always get creative and shoot silhouettes and things like that when the sun limits your options. Another idea is to get in the water - besides the extra gear necessity, this allows for some options for different angles. Good info! I guess I'll have to tough up and swim out with my housing sooner than warm weather. Been waiting for a smaller day to give it a go. Winter waves are heavy!

Mostly waist high with some swells up to chest level. I think I got a few good shots, but I'll have to take a closer look. Will be sure to post something up later... Man, that took me forever to get these posted up...
