I just received an email re the official launch of the Nikon D600. Interestingly, it seems like a whole new sensor. I'm pretty curious about it's performance compared to Canon's current offerings.

Could easily be a 5D3 killer at almost a grand and a half less. Looks damn good. Hopefully will cause the 5D3 to drop substantially in price. I want to see Nicksan's investment in two of them to tank overnight. ;)

I am really excited about what it means as is obvious that the trend has enphasis on FF sensor at a more modest price.
I hope Canon follows the trend, supposedly with the 6D, at a competitive price point.
I am sure many buyers that where considering investing on a first FF will be attracted to Nikon D600 price point.
I am not ready to jump ship just yet , but I will certainly sit and wait how the FF market behaves.
The Nikon D600 will be an excellent camera and a good thing for everyone interested in upgrading to FF regardless of the brand you use today. I think.

Very interesting how this camera body war is developing.
Not just Canon - Nikon, even Sony is putting forth some nice bodies.

Competition is good for the consumer.

just a few of my thoughts...

It is not meant to compete with the 5DIII, IMO, no AF micro adjust, max speed 1/4000 sec, Lower end body with more plastic, only 9 cross type AF points....etc... it is however a direct competition to the 5DmkII or next incarnation thereof. Could well be we see a 5D Rebel ti ;)

From http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d600/spec.htm (external link)

Autofocus
Nikon Multi-CAM 4800 autofocus sensor module with TTL phase detection, fine-tuning, 39 focus points (including 9 cross-type sensors; the center 33 points are available at apertures slower than f/5.6 and faster than f/8, while the center 7 points are available at f/8), and AF-assist illuminator (range approx. 0.5 to 3 m/1 ft 8 in. to 9 ft 10 in.)

Unless it's an error ...

How you want to put it, 100% viewfinder, better AF, pop up flash with commander, nice video with clean hdmi, same processor as D4 , and more for 1000$ less at launch is a very sexy deal and a tough card to beat for Canon, 1000$ can buy some pretty cool glass.
I Think everyone wins with Nikon's move as we are seeing more options and upping the competition, id say, even Sony a99 brings great innovation to the field. ,Today , Nikon line looks pretty sexy IMO

Crazy.

Looking at B&H, I could purchase the following:

D600 + 24-70/2.8G + 35/1.8G + 85/1.8G + SB700 = $5007

OR

5DIII + 24-70/2.8LII = $5758

I might be missing something here, but the D600 is listed at £2k, and you can get the D800 for £2.2k... Is the price difference bigger in the US?

Okay, in other words the £1955 figure must be set to come down somewhat when it actually hits the shelves, because otherwise no-one will be buying a D600 in the UK!
