My 75-300 gets lots of use. The biggest problem with this lens is that the focus HUNTS a lot. I have got a lot of good shots with it. I hear the newer 70-300mm IS is a better lens and has a better focus system.

did you have a question or just posting photos?

I was posting photos of that peticular lens, for input, as to see what others thought of this inexpensive lens.

I have not as of yet, been infected with the L virus, thankfully, because I am not going into debt for it. If, it is a crime, to post just anything, other than an L lens topic. Call me guilty, I plan on getting there one of these days, but it will be on my time, and not anybody elses.

I see you are a Senior Member, so I am not sure how to take your comment. I will assume you are asking in a constuctive way, and not an arogant way. I am well aware of personalities of authority figures. Many, are in their place, for all the wrong reasons, and you know what they say when we assume.

So, on that note, I will take your comment, as one of a question, as to help others. Also, I will note that, in the future, I will add more to my post, to give direction as to where I was trying to go, and what I would like to get back in return.

I was just putting it out there, to see what others thought, of the pictures, from that lens, or should I just go and buy the 15-55, and have a good day.

You remind me of some one from another forum, you have only been a member since March of 05, have 1200 post , became a senior member, and make incomplete post yourself to others. For what reason, I can only guess, and I am sure, you will quickly let me know, (Raven).

alas it is the lense's only true downfall, i cant tell you how many times the focus has been close to perfect,but upon hitting the shutter button, the lens chooses to go the complete oposite direction of focus and i spend three seconds waiting for it to come back, by that time whatever i wanted to take a photo of is gone .

rwenglish, have you noticed any advatage to haveing the lens hood?

A hood...........who uses a hood? ...............I have been thinking about getting one, just seem to have all kind of other thinks I want also. Like the 50mm 1.4 and the 17-40L that I got about a month ago.

I've been using this lens for a few years with mixed results. As others have said the AF tends to hunt around. I wasn't sure how much of this was down to my D30. Anyway, I've missed quite a few shots due to erratic AF with this lens. When it works though, the results are not bad. It's well known to be a bit soft at 300mm wide open, but that's hardly a surprise at this price. Stopped down a bit, it's fine. I've just bought a 300mm f4 L IS for Christmas, so I can compare when I get my hands on it

Had and sold. Replaced with the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 EX / HSM with the 1.4x TC. Was not happy with soft lines from this lens.

I have always been told, being sensitive isn't a bad thing. But it seems, speaking up for ones self, is. I can kind of see what you mean, you do have an eye on things. Too bad, it wasn't for better input!

Well I think those look pretty good, considering the lens, abilities. When I tried the lens last Friday, we had cloudy and windy conditions. You all, are right, if the subject was moving, the lens would keep hunting for it. In fact, I finally turned off the AF, and used MF, I was happier with those shots. But I have to believe, on a bright sunny, windless day, it will work for now.

I have not had any bright sunny days, or any sunny days, here for a while to get out and try it. I think starting out with something you can afford, and working with it, and learning from it. Only makes one appreciate the finer things in life, when you can afford them, and get them.
Maybe I shouldn't of bought my nice cowboy hat.

I must admit i wonder'd what your post was about and was trying to figer out if you had a question , and you dont have to have L's to post, some lenses are almost as good as L's anyway.
i take it you meen the 18 to 55 kit lens , some like it and get good result's Me i dont like it i think it has poor color low contrast and feels cheap and after all it is one of the cheaper canon lenses.

Well then, I think this post must be, working, in some way as informative, information. There has been quite a wide view of opinions posted, I can live with that. This is a free country, and free speech is allowed.

We only learn, from positive and negative inputs, in ones life, and, one should be able to take and use both. I really apreciate, everyones comments, it is better than not posting at all. I am really not offended by any of them, and if my response offends, well then, my most sincere apoligizes.

I know I am guilty, of being in a hurry, I have lots to do, all of the time. I can always look back, and see things should have been done differently.( But my Granpa use to say, When, ones looking back, he is not going forward. )

I bought this lens, but, I really didn't know if I should have. But I like the Canon EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, just fine, which I bought it with my Canon 20D. But I always wished that is was a little longer. So when I seen this lens forsale, ( Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens w/ Hood ), I was hoping it would be as equal, to the Canon EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. If not, well my ( Grandpa use to say: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.)

Canon lenses are like John Deere tractors,it doesn't matter what model, buy them, use them, take care of them, and you will get back your money.


One last thing, this is one of the most informative and rewarding forums, I have found. I come here because, I want to be a better photographer. I have read post from many, who share their knowledge, and give positve information, freely. The photos that forum contributors post, are some of the best I have seen, it is nice to get glimpses, of the many things, that people experience in this world, that I may never get to see, or experience, other wise.

Yes, this lens is much better on a bright sunny day. The AF is generally ok then, just a little slow. People seem to give this lens a hard time, but it's pretty good for the money and the IS is genuinely useful for hand held shooting. It works best if you keep it around 200mm when open or stop it down at 300mm. If you work around these limitations, it performs pretty well. Here's an interesting link to some critical test results.

I had to get rid of mine. Between the soft focus and the constant hunting it drove me crazy.
