Seems the entertainment industry is going to start cracking down on people using music in their business w/o permission from the original artists. A woman from our state just got nailed........Photographers-- you better use royalty free music for your needs. Every attorney that thinks they can make .05 cents will sue your butt off.......read the article

This is not news. ASCAP has been man handling restaurant owners for years now. Our local eatery owes to the tune of $30k. Fat chance that's gonna happen and meanwhile the tunes keep flowing.

Photographers hate it when their photo is ripped off can you blame musicians when they feel the same?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Well, not so much muscians, but legally a "copyright owner" is a "copyright owner" whether it's one person or a corporation.

Why not so much with musicians? I don't see a difference. Please explain, as I am interested to see why you think "not so much" with musicians, as compared to photographers.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Yeah.. in reality, turn it around. What if an band/musician used your photo on the cover of their CD? I do think there are slight differences, as it's more about the RIAA losing their bucks.. versus a single photog. But.. it's still along the same vein.

A brewing supply house I used to go to had a separate place for brews and music and they clearly had a large sign posted at the door saying if you were a member of the ASCAP or whatever it is called, you weren't welcome and you would be considered trespassing. Because they don't care if you have a live band, or are playing the jukebox.

Ya know, in all this, there seems to be a niche that someone should jump on. Why not pair up with local bands? There are literally thousands of bands that would jump at the chance of having their music used on websites, etc.
I think we put too much emphasis on music from the big bands. Local bands make good music too!

To the extent--which will be pointed out by someone sooner or later in this thread--that it's not really the muscians who benefit by the copyright on their work, but rather the corporations.

Edit: Hah! Someone already has!

But as I said, legally a copyright holder is a copyright holder whether an individual or a corporation, so that's not really a point that needs to be argued. As content creators ourselves, it's to our benefit to respect copyright, even if we don't like some of the other entities who also benefit from it.

Lets not confuse the morality of copyright infringement with the associated absurdly disproportionate damages, particularly when those damages are only awarded when the plaintiff is a big company.
