Photographers hate it when their photo is ripped off can you blame musicians when they feel the same?

You beat me to it. How is it that torches and pitchforks are raised when someone spots someone else using one of their photos on a website without their permission, but apparently it's perfectly okay to use music on your photography site without permission from the artist?

Just because the artist may be famous or have a record deal doesn't mean you're not doing exactly the same thing that you're quick to complain about when it's done to you.

Mmmmmm, I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning.

yeah but its a little different..

Oh? How so...?

^^^ That.. I don't see a difference. If you are the legitimate copyright owner you have the same rights no matter what your size. Whether a single photo taken by a guy with a camera or a corporation with thousands of copyrighted songs, how is it different?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

at least I can sing Happy Birthday on my birthday without paying royalties

oh wait... I can't

Thats True! Thats why restaurants that have wait staff come to your table to sing a birthday song, sing their own made up version of "Happy Birthday" so they don't have to pay royalties as a public establishment. But if you sing Happy Birthday in your own home, no charge there!

I thought "Thou shalt not steal" was one of the Commandments. Did this get cancelled at some point and I wasn't told? Just becomes "everyone is doing it" doesn't make it any less illegal or unethical. Like the others in this thread have stated, if you were in those artists' shoes, would you be ok with having your stuff stolen?

Ya know, in all this, there seems to be a niche that someone should jump on. Why not pair up with local bands? There are literally thousands of bands that would jump at the chance of having their music used on websites, etc.
I think we put too much emphasis on music from the big bands. Local bands make good music too!

Why not arrange a trade - promo photos for using a local musician's song? My brother in law and I have this arrangement going - my shots are on the front page of his sight, his song is on mine... fortunately for me - his stuff is amazing!

It is the way they do it that pisses me off. Seeking millions of dollars from a single mother of 4 for 24 songs? Most times when someone uses our images we just ask them to stop. In a few circumstances we may seek damages. We don't bully people into paying 6 figures minimum.

I pay for my music and do not support piracy. However, I find it funny that they compare it to stealing from a store when the max fine for that is probably tiny yet they sue from millions of dollars from individuals when they are huge corporations.

For sure. I mean, I don't see why people don't steal from the store then. Do you think walmart would even prosecute a stolen CD? No way. But I bet the RIAA would sue them for stealing it from the store. I would love to see that case.

But this isn't about record companies and their excessive reactions to piracy. It's about hypocrisy with regards to using something without permission.

I saw nothing about hypocrisy in the OPs link, but the story was about excessive fines if you don't pay their $10 extortion settlement to make up for lost sales.

I thought "Thou shalt not steal" was one of the Commandments.

If you'll kindly indulge me in a spot of pointless pedantry for the sake of random trivia, the commandment given to Moses is actually translated as a directive to not steal people; in other words, not to kidnap citizens or to steal slaves, crimes which were considered capital crimes at the time, along with murder and adultery, hence its inclusion in the commandments. Theft of property was not considered a capital crime at the time, and was therefore not included, even though today we consider that particular commandment to mean theft in this sense.

/random trivia <insert nerdy face here>

I didn't say the linked article was hypocritical.

It's funny how people use the "high and mighty" card, when it suits them. Let me ask you this.. did you EVER record a song onto a cassette tape in the 70's, 80's, 90's... or a VHS/Beta tape? Did you ever play a CD/cassette/Album at a wedding, party, etc? Yes to any of these, and a huge number of other infractions..makes you a big sinner!

I recorded and swapped tapes in the 80s and 90s because I was a kid and sincerely didn't know any better.

Then I grew up.
