The next big question is, whether one should go for a canon 5d mk2 or a nikon D600. Both have almost similar price tags, but the Nikon D600 is packed with more features.

well, D600 is a even better camera at almost the same price of 5D2. I can't see why buying 5D2 unless you already have invested in Canon glass.

Bingo.

Or you don't like the ergonomics and layout of the Nikons. Which I don't.

Or you like canon products better. The d600 is not what would draw me to Nikon. They had there chance a few years ago and i went with canon. No need to switch due to the flavor of the day.

What's the rush? You know Canon is working on their entry level FF and it will be out shortly. Canon seems to be waiting to see what Nikon puts out first and then putting up their offering a little afterwards lately.
If you're a Canon person, just wait. :)

Ergonomics, of course, are very subjective. but the specs on the D600 are close to those of the 5D3 at $3500. 5D2 can't possibly compete unless the price dropping below $1500.

Whichever I already have lenses for. If I was buying brand new into a system and had no loyalty to either brand, I'd go with the Nikon D600. Since I do have loyalty/ experience with the Canon brand (I have never owned anything Nikon), I'd go with Mark II even if I was buying brand new into the system. But that's a personal preference.

HOWEVER, question for those that know: I'm not too familiar with Nikon products. But reading through the specifications, seems like the the D600 (And other FF Nikon cameras) has the ability to use in "DX" mode and thus use your crop-sensor lenses as well? Is this correct?

Right when I saw the announcement I started contemplated selling my 5D MK2 but I used to shoot Nikon and prefer the ergonomics and layout more. If you are not in a particular camp already and don't have lenses I would say go for the D600 although the 5D MK2 is a wonderful camera and you can actually get them used in great condition for $800 after tax less which you can invest in glass.

I'd go for a D600 and shoot portraits with an 85mm f/1.2....oh ...............nikon fails since they dont have one :P

Seriously I'd go for a d800 if I was jumping in the nikon camp.
