I bought this along with the pancake last week. As some of you already know, the pancake didn't work out so well. But I'm very surprised at the IQ and AF speed of the zoom, especially considering the price. I haven't owned a normal zoom in at least 5 years, and to have a 4x zoom that runs from wide to telephoto - it's like, well, my birthday! I'll be using it in the field for the 1st time on Sunday for a local triathlon I'm covering for the paper. I initially bought it with the idea of street shooting, but I can also see using it for snaps - something I really don't do a lot of. (I really don't like pulling out "professional looking" equipment for casual get togethers, so maybe this will be an answer.)

It's funny, I never felt this way about the 70-200 II... :)

Just got my 28-70 f3.5-4.5 kit lens in the mail today.

Not many people know about it but its MTF's are bested only by Magic Red Ring lenses and even wide-open it's tack sharp.

Once upon a time I was trying to decide between the 24-70L and 24-105L lenses. So I bought these two lenses and shot with them for a few months so I could decide which focal length was the better fit for me.

I really liked the shots I got from both of the lenses and consider them a great option for anybody on a tight budget.

I just sold my 28-105 II to a college student. I had way to much hardware laying around, it was redundant and she need a lens for the used 7D she just bought. I miss it.

My underdog is for sure the Samyang 14mm... Only cost me $280 or something and its probably the sharpest lens I had ever seen. Sure it has some distortion, but its fixed with the profile... So much fun to use, my best images come from it. Easily.

I have the 28-105 I. Plasticky and not smooth but set it at 6.3 and it's sweet.

Perhaps I was not clear. The "two lenses" I was referring to are the 28-70 and 28-105 that you and J-Dogg were talking about, not the expensive L lenses.

Ah, thanks. Wasn't sure about that. :)

I've had good luck with the 24-85 and 28-105 USM lenses. I don't like to keep underdogs around though since I tend to use them more than my more expensive glass.

My new underdog has got to be the Sigma 24-60mm 2.8. Great colors and sharp @2.8 on. Very impressed and somewhat suprised!

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!
