Anyone recognize this?
I at first thought it might be a hummingbird nest, but I have had people that are more apt to know than I would be say, "NO", so...
The insides of it was approximately 3" deep, so I seriously doubt it's a bird nest, but, I might be wrong.
I have been told it might be "gall", meaning a tree growth, or caused by an insect... (I don't think that is what this is, but, I might be wrong...)
Also, I've been told it was a spider's nest, specifically a Argiope spider.
I took this shot about 12 years ago in East Texas, at my lake cabin, it was in a young Live Oak tree. The 'nest' was about 3-1/2' off of the ground. It was also Summer, if I remember right. I took the shot, and left it alone for a few days, then came back to it, and it was not there any longer, nobody around at all to disturb it either, so that was odd.
This appears to be made like a wasp makes it's nest, paper-like, but also at the same time, it had spider webs remnants, at least, I think, from memory.
No traces of feathers either, or anything that was tell-tale.
Notice also that it had a lip around the top, "gall" doesn't usually have that, from what I have (only recently) seen. A spider's nest 'might', but I doubt that a growth even made by an insect would.
If I had to bet, I'd say, "SPIDER", but then again, if I knew, I wouldn't be asking.
Anyway, if you know what it is, I'd appreciate it, it has had me stumped all of these years, and I just ran across the image again, hence the question. If you do know, and you have a link to something similar, please share it if you would.
Thanks!
Randy
