Winged insect - ID please

Swarms of these winged insects arrived in my field yesterday about an hour before sunset. Perhaps they're common... I've never seen them before. The black markings on the wings hint of iridescent blue depending on the angle of light. They never spread their wings, unless flying, of course:

nice shots, love the color. that is Ailanthus Webworm moth. Pretty much lives all over the eastern part of the US.
