List 5 lenses you think are a must in shooting a wedding

will the 24-105 and 17-40 suffice, used on a 5D III? After all, it has at least 1 stop better low light performance than the mark II and 7D.

I guess you need to see the Venue and where you will be positioned to better comment but the typical range to cover is 24-70 and 70-200. I would suggest your looking to shoot a little too wide.

thanks, but will the 17-40 and 24-105 be too slow? I may be shooting a wedding in the near future, and thinking of renting a 24L instead of the 24-70. I also have the 50L and intend to get the 85L soon.

A tough question to answer so I'll give it a go, and bear in mind I haven't used a 5DIII.

By shooting f4 on your 5DIII you'll need to wind the ISO up to match F2.8 on the 5DII removing the advantage you gained of the extra stop.

However, you are gaining a greater depth of field at F4 and removing some risk of miss focus.

Personally, I'd rather have F2.8 lenses on the 5DIII and have the choice of the DOF.

If its really dark which happens then F2.8 fails and you'll be on the primes.

I dunno about 5... on my own, I don't really use 5 at most weddings...
35L and Sig 85 will cover 90% of my weddings...
the 70-200L II gets a lot of use as well

the 24-70 is more of a backup to the 35L, but I do sometimes use it when I need something wider than 35

the 16-35 rarely comes to weddings anymore - only if its a tight location will I take it

I just got the 100L, so this should be used at least for ring shots... until now, a tube on the Sig85 did the trick.

and if this is a 2-photog wedding, my 2nd will use 135L, 24-70 and 70-200 a lot... he did use the 100-400 at a beach wedding last week!

Maybe. 70 is a little short for ceremonies though, IMHO. You definitely don't NEED 5 lenses though. You may think you're covering everything but you may very well end up getting bogged down.

I have not shot a wedding and don't plan to, but I would use...

24-70L
35L
70-200 II
16-35L
100 macro

If you were to narrow down to three:
24-70L (II) and 70-200L II are "must" have lenses.
How about the third? 16-35L or 100 macro? Why?

that's pretty tough choice, but my answer would be c, another body

16-35. the 100 macro is a specialty lens. you can get more use from the 16-35 vs the 100mm imho. you can always get extension tubes if you want to do pseudo macro work.

1. 24-70L
2. 70-200L
3. 50 (1.8, 1.4, 1.2 all will serve well, for details and wide shots)
4. 85 (portraits and details)
5. 35L (awesome lens OMG I drool each time I use this lens)

Primes: 35L, 85L, 135L
Zooms: 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 ii
Combo: 16-35, 85/135L
Poor man's primes: 35 f2, 85 1.8
Poor man's zooms: Sigma 17-50, Tamron 70-200
