I was on vacation the week of 8/13 - 8/17 and I was able to go whale watching for most of the week. The whales were pretty scattered and elusive during the week which made for some difficult watching. This one whale literally saved my vacation! These shots were taken Friday afternoon during the last 15-20 minutes of the trip. This is a 5 year old whale named Longboard. We spotted it breaching in the distance and keep our fingers crossed that it would continue breaching until we got close enough. Thankfully it did and we were treated to at least 3 dozen breaches with quite a few very close to the boat.
#1 - Breaching as we approach.
#2 - One of the many splashes!

#6 - This shot's kind of interesting. See the raw patch on the right side of it's head? The biologists think that's from rubbing on the sea floor while trying to scare the fish out. Some whales have these marks on the left side while others have it on the right. The same ratio between people being righties or lefties applies to whales being righties or lefties. Pretty cool little tidbit.
