Hi,

Straight forward bad news, i dropped my 1Ds3 with 24-70L by mistake from the bag and the lens broken from the ring mount, the front element is fine, the back seems fine, but the whole mount part is broken, so now should i replace the lens or that can be fixed? I don't want to buy newer one as it will be more expensive than repairing this one.

Also, do you recommend me to send the body too as it may had some internal damage or if it works fine with another lens then no need to send it too?

I hate when things happen like this by sudden and mistakes

The lens is designed to break at the mount, so you should definitely send it in for repair instead of buying a new one.

Having the lens break at the mount both protects the vital parts of the lens, and reduces the forces on the camera body.

If the camera is fine with other lenses then you shouldn't need to send it in - unless you want them to clean it etc at the same time.

Well, i was thinking the same thing, i am just worry if any smaller particles went inside the body when dropped, i will test the camera later, i said i am worry that same damage may happened inside the body and it may occur after a while of usage, but sure i don't want to send the body also then it will cost me more to repair both, i will send the lens definitely first, later i will worry about the body.

... you should definitely send it in for repair instead of buying a new one.....

Unless you really, really, really want the new 24-70 Mark II (which appears in early testing to be incredibly sharp for a zoom!)... in which case maybe this unfortunately drop was a subconscious desire to plunk down a big chunk of money on a new lens.

If you aren't inclined to replace and/or upgrade at this time, I'm sure it can be fixed and quite likely it will come back as good as new. If uncertain depending upon the cost of repair, Canon will quote you the cost and give you a chance to decide the best route, once they see the lens and have a chance to evaluate what's needed.

If the camera body seems to be working okay, then just keep an eye on it and send it later if any problems crop up.

If you use the camera and lens to make your living and have any big jobs coming up where they will be essential tools, you might ignore the above and send everything in now to have it thoroughly checked out, in order to be as certain as possible that all is working as it should and can be completely relied upon.

No living or big job coming, so i can wait for a while, i will send the lens first, later i will send the camera just for checking and say they may calibrate it if necessary, the real issue for me is that when i put a budget to buy something else, tools or accessories, then this curse accident happen to change my purchases plans.

Take a note of the cost of used 24-70 Mk I lenses. A freshly serviced Mk I is worth a lot of money.

Sorry for your lost. It will cost some money to fix it. Hopefully, Canon can get it right with one try. It will be as good as new. Along with the service paper from Canon, I would sell and save up for the 24-70 II. I assume you will fetch more money with the lens because it was just serviced by Canon.

LOL I was thinking the same thing! :D

In all seriousness, hope the repair bill doesn't come back too bad.

Tareq, I don't know if CPS is restricted to certain countries, but if it isn't you should consider joining to get free body cleanings, expedited and discounted repairs, etc.

I haven't seen you post in the gear forums lately.

Well, i sent this lens for service before when it was dropped with filter stuck on it, it came back better than before, now i am sure they will service it same great again, better than it has been used for long time without service, if that MKII wasn't so expensive then i can definitely sell my MK 1 and add more budget to get MKII, but my plan was to replace my 70-200 MK1 to get mk2 over 24-70L, i use 70-200 these days more than 24-70L due to sports shooting, and my Hassy killed the usage of my 1Ds3+24-70L for a while.

Well, i don't think we have that program, if so i am not a member of it yet, not sure how to do it, but i will ask about it somewhere here.

I didn't post lately because i don't shoot much this year since last year except sports[football], and i didn't have many purchasing plans, so i was like in a break from photography, and it is summer in my country with the heat up to about 50 C degree, i must stop doing outdoors shooting and nothing much to shoot indoors, took a rest to look at my old photos and trying to plan for new ideas and also to see what gear i need to keep or need to replace or need to add and so on, nothing much to post here these days anyway.

Since you're not using your gears at the moment because of the heat in your country, I would sell off the 24-70 and save it toward the new one. I assume in six months time the price of the 24-700 II would be more affordable. The resell value of your 24-70 I is worth more now than in six months time.

When I first got into photography, I didn't have time to properly research for good gears. As a result, I bought half-decent gears (24-105 and 70-200 f4 IS) as oppose to really really good gears (24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 IS II) which would last me a long time.

I recently decided to sell off all gears and save the money toward quality gears. Luckily for me, I have been able to fetch good money for most of my gears. I still have a few small items to sell.

I am now taking a break from photography (except spending time here on this site) and planning to rebuild my collection by next spring. Hopefully by then the prices of the 5DIII and 24-70 II would drop by 15-20%.

That is what I'm betting on now!

I am almost thinking same way, now my plan for future is to update some of my old gear more than buying new things, i have very nice collection so far, just few replacements or updates and i will be set fine, 2 lenses and 3 bodies and i am all good, and i found nice prices for bodies in my country, just now i am worry to find good prices to my old bodies i planned to sell, 1DX is maybe high priority now and 70-200 mk2 is top in list to get.
