Hi,

Just found out about a retro fashion / classic car show here in town.

It's outdoors, scheduled from about 10am to 6pm, weather is supposed to be good, so
bright sunlight...

I'm thinking I will need to use some fill flash for the photos of the people, and would like some suggestions / ideas for settings and techniques - not that familiar with using fill flash outdoors.

I have a 7d, and plan on mounting a 580EX.

Should I use any sort of diffusion at all? Or just the bare lens on the flash?

Full power? - I'm shooting people with a 17-55, so I plan on being say 5'-6' for closeups to ?? for a full body shot (or to include a car)

Metering modes? ETTL?

any thoughts, comments, suggestions appreciated.

I shoot non diffused at 1/2 power with a 50mm on a crop body. Works well.

Diffusion (the tupperware stuff) will do you absolutely no good.
Just use bare flash straight on. ETTL is pretty okay nowadays, and you can always dial in some FEC.
If you use manual flash, that will be consistent, but only if the distance to your subject, aperture and ISO are constant…

If you shoot portraits up close, something like this might be okay:
