Fisherman

Saw this guy on the beach today. It was tough, very clear day without a cloud in the sky

I'm leaning toward the color since the sky is so empty, no detail

I'm sitting here trying to think of something to write about this shot. It's technically competent, if not perhaps a tad underexposed. I'm not a great fan of black and white. So I'm not competent to voice an opinion on that.

I think what I'm stumbling on is that it's just not that engaging. There's no connection between the fisherman and the rod. The rod is aimed in one direction and he's facing the other. When there are people in the shot, showing their eyes always makes it more compelling. He's sitting with his face turned away and his hand is obscuring what little you can see of it.

I would add that the fisherman himself is extremely near the left pic border. I would have put him a bit more to the right. My first impression was that the guy was about to fall off form the picture! LOL!

I have to agree, there just isn't much going on here. The fisherman even seems to be talking on the phone.

The image is fairly well exposed and sharp. Composition could be a bit better moving the fisherman to the left, away from the right edge.

I also see some nice layers, and as I'm a fan of B&W, I chose that to edit (big edit; I cropped it). Thoughts?

I agree with Kirk and I like his edit, but it still seems a little dark.

I wouldn't edit the original color version of the photograph, the rod's height seems to add to it. Keep it "as is". Nice shot.

Looking again at the edit I did, I agree it is too dark. Maybe I should have done the color. In either case, I like it, I just like my cropped version a little better.

Oh, and as a fisherman myself, the rod leaning the other way adds to that feeling of exasperation, or 'I give up', and think it drives that point home.
