Just came back from a 4-day trip at Katmai. The salmon run was over, so the bears moved away from the Fall to the Lower River where they feast on the late arrival or already spawned salmon 24/7 to put on weight for the winter. There were about a dozen bears there at any given time, many came into the lodge and camp areas as well, but they are really peaceful, except for an occasional dispute over salmon that lasted for a few seconds. I shot these with a 5D3, 300mmf2.8, 2X converter, but there are many other shots at close range that there was no need for the converter.

It was taken from a raised viewing platform, so pretty safe. The distance was about 30 yards I would guess.
