I have an XTi and would like to upgrade. I know this question has been asked and I have searched it.

I have been looking for a 50D but just found a really great deal on a super clean 40D. I can afford the extra money to get a 50D. I have a nifty fifty and a 85mm F1.8 lens. i shoot inside and outside sports and family type photos.

Thanks for any input

40D is a very capable camera, main differences between 40D and 50D are the upgraded live-view, more megapixels and the Micro Focus adjust.

I would go for the 50D. The XTi and the 40D are both 10 MP, so all that you gain is better build, a better viewfinder and better ergometrics, but with the 50D you get all these plus higher resolution which means better detail and a bit more wiggle room on crops and MFA can be a big advantage (or not, depending on your lenses.)

The only thing the 50D has that the 40D doesn't that I would like is Micro Focus Adjustment. But I wouldn't pay a $200 premium for it. I shoot a 40D all the time, along with a 5DIII and sold a 7D. The 40D images are nice.

The 40d is a great camera with excellent IQ. I still have mine and the IQ compares favourably with my 5dii in real-world use (i.e. if i don't go pixel peeking!) However, at 10Mp, it runs out of steam if you want to print v.large.

The 50d is a tad noisier than the 40d from what I've read.

Well I have a 50d for sale...

50D has a larger screen as well if I remember correctly.

I moved from XTi to 40D several years ago. I still have my 40D even after I bought a 7D. You will be very happy with a 40D compared to the XTi. One of the big things I noticed right away is the much improved AF. Sometimes with the XTi the camera just wouldn't take the picture, 'cause it wouldn't lock focus. That problem was completely solved with the 40.
The 50D has a few better features, but if you want to save the $200, you won't be unhappy with the 40D. Also, the extra megapixels you get with the 50D aren't that big a deal. You have 10mp now, so you know it makes fantastic pictures.

$200 go with the 40D unless you are doing very large prints, micro adjustments and extra MP is not worth a 50% premimum since you can find 40D's for $400 easily.

I would say get the 50, I have both and the 40 is a great camera but the extra feature and MA and better screen are worth it. In some ways the noise is better on the 40D but it's marginal.
