I used to have a 40D as my main camera, and I kept it after I upgraded to the 7D. I found the 40D to be a very solid and dependable camera. Tough and gives great photos. A very nice camera which I can strongly recommend.

Well I have a 50d for sale...

50D has a larger screen as well if I remember correctly.

The screens are the same size, 50D screen has more resolution though.

I have 2 40D's and a 50D. They are basically identical as far as the body's and button layout goes. As others have said, the only real noticeable difference of any real consequence is the megapixels, and even then most people wouldn't notice the difference.

Personally I would go with the 40D. It's a rock solid camera that just keeps going, and save the money for better glass or a good tripod or whatever else you may want. When you're ready to upgrade again in a year or two, you will probably be able to get a 60D or maybe even a 7D for not much more than the 50D would cost you now.

[QUOTE=paulkaye;14994755]The 40d is a great camera with excellent IQ. I still have mine and the IQ compares favourably with my 5dii in real-world use (i.e. if i don't go pixel peeking!) However, at 10Mp, it runs out of steam if you want to print v.large.

+ 1..... still using mine with the excellent 15-85 fixed to it.

The 15-85 breathed a new lease of life into my 40D for general use. The 150/2.8 EX macro also keeps me coming back to the 40D too.

I am a huge fan of the 40D. My primary bodies are 2 7Ds but I will not part with my 40D. I have shot the 50D and it is a nice camera but there is little differance in the 2 bodies and my 40D has never given me any trouble.

I loved my 40D. Size, control layout, AF and IQ. Only upgraded to my 60D because I dropped the 40D and it cost more to fix it than it was worth.
